My buddies and I used to play Axis and Allies all the time; get the game together, order up some 'zas, get some beer, and away you go. Terrific way to waste an entire evening, especially if you don’t have a girlfriend.
Who else is a big A&A fan? Did you play with the World at War expansion? I notice they have some new A&A games out, one for just Europe and one for just the Pacific; has anyone tried them?
I played it frequently and often and many times, too. And then it became a race to see whoever got heavy bombers first. And then house rules were implemented, and changed, and changed again, and thrown away, and then we went back to vanilla A&A.
And then Hasbro released a multiplayer online version, and friends and I played that online against random opponents, and were quite happy at finding some new tactics that we had never seen. And soon our nostalgia waned, and we returned to Squad Leader, or Rise & Fall of the Third Reich, or other Avalon Hill games with a little more complexity.
And then the Pacific and European games were released, and I snapped them up in a heartbeat … and played them a dozen times each, tops. And enthusiasm has waned, and they’re sitting on the top shelf in my closet, on top of Cults Across America, the Chaosium Cthulhu-themed game, and beneath Twister.
Don’t ask.
So. Yeah, I’ve played 'em, and loved them at times, and grown exceedingly bored at times. I’m in the trough of a sine wave right now, but if the opportunity presented itself, I’d jump at a chance to play.
Except it’s no longer a terrific way to waste an entire evening, since I do have a girlfriend. Sacrifices must be made, huh.
What nostalgia! I haven’t played A&A since my sophomore year in college. I well remember how boring it was to play Russia (every turn, you just bought more infantry); the game Steve, playing Germany, had his entire navy sunk by one British sub; the game Dave decided to build a factory in South Africa, only to have it captured the very next turn; and the time we were interrupted by a guy on the floor having his 21st birthday party, which turned into a VomitFest.
I was an addict of the original game, my problem was finding friends to play. Then I got the computer version, and I could play the comp, or get an online game…
Then they released the Europe and Pacific versions… don’t have Pacific yet, but I do have Europe set up at work, and we play when the power goes out, or when the network goes down, or when we don’t have much else to do. It’s fun, but I prefer the original, because quite simply, I just don’t see how Germany wins the European-only game. I think the original was more balanced.
I’ll have to move the original version to work
I’d love to write a computer version of any of the versions, but I am pretty sure if I tried to distribute it, I’d get sued. they have been pretty aggressive crushing A & A clones in the past.
I used to play in the early 90s at work. If you work at a single screen theatre you have plenty of time to kill between shows especially if it is a long movie.
