William Shatner amuses me. I feel so bad that you guys don’t like him. Really bad. snicker
I mean, here’s this group of four or five actors, getting occasional guest star roles on TV in the early 60’s. Maybe a movie role once in a while. Though Shatner was a reasonably hot property, pre-Trek, it’s been asserted that these actors were more or less of the working, but struggling, variety.
Then along comes this new show, and they probably thought of it as being a brief interlude, part of a career in which they’d go on to other roles. And instead of that, they all became totally identified with those roles–and probably among the most recognized actors on the planet. Being a Trek fan I’m grateful that at least they made a damn good living out of making some entertaining films, all after
the original series died on the vine.
Like I’ve never heard that one before.
But, yeah, he did. He’s still making music, though.
I cringe every time I see those commercials…
“She’s at the bottom of the pool…” yeah, she drowned… wink wink…
Leonard Nimoy wasn’t struggling! Before “Star Trek,” he distinguished himself with a hot guest shot on the soap opera “General Hospital” as Benny the Pill Pusher.
William Shatner actually DOES talk like that – I’ve heard him in “normal” conversation. My opinion of the A@@?
William Shatner = walking ego. And Captain Kirk sucks, too!!
I hate Star Trek and William Shitner. However…I LIKE Leonard Nimoy. I always see him in more intellectual ventures, and doing narrating for History Channel and A&E.
He has class.
I like William Shatner. I think he shows tremendous charm and good humor in dealing with being forever known for a part he played for three years 30 years ago.
One of my favorite quotes from Shatner came when he was asked whether he would like to go up into space. He responded that he had no interest in going to space, because in space there is no audience. Far from believing that he is Captain Kirk, he thinks of himself as an actor, and Kirk as merely the most popular of the roles he has played.
As for Leonard Nimoy, in addition to being a very intelligent, cultured, thoughtful man, he is a talented director, whose films include “Three Men and A Baby” and “The Good Mother” starring Diane Keaton. His autobiography, “I Am Spock” is a great read, and talks about a lot more than just his Star Trek experiences.
I still prefer TNG to the original series, though.
Shoot! After previewing this post, I realized that I’m in the Pit. But since “shoot” is as obscene as I get, I’m not sure how to make this more Pit-worthy.
Ha, Ha, Shatner!!! All of that Priceline stock they gave you is now WORTHLESS. Try singing about THAT, why don’t you?
Bones! Thisthreadisn’t DOING! Anything.
It’s dead, Jim.
Shit!
I read an interview with William Shatner in which he talked about a conversation he had with a cabbie. Seems the cabbie had been a Vietnam P.O.W., and the only way he and his friends were able to hold onto their sanity in the camp was to pretend that they were Kirk, Spock, etc. and run through episodes of “Star Trek.”
In the holiday spirit, can’t you just let this feeble attempt of mine at humour … slide?
What would you suggest Willy does with himself? He is hopelessly typecast as Kirk, so he can’t get any more decent acting roles. I think he just realized that the only way to make a living (without getting a real job, of course) would be to turn himself into a joke. It seems to have worked.
I think Shatner has an enormous ego, and probably isn’t a very pleasant or humble man. But - those Priceline ads are so obviously satire. He is satirizing himself, get it? Come on! If you didn’t get that…WHOOOOSH!
And his character (“Big Giant Head”) on Third Rock is also hilarious. He’s done a pretty good job of making fun of himself, IMO. I can’t be irritated with the Priceline ads. I think they’re amusing. (Not that I look forward to seeing them, exactly…)
Sorry. It’s just that when they first broke up I heard that a lot from fans and magazines, and even once on the radio. It’s a really stupid pun, I think.
Happy Holidays.
