Electric Company…Is it me or did the folks on EC seem to be a bit high? Loved the show anyway!
Hmmm…
Liberty’s Kids - cartoon set in Revolutionary War times, with Ben Franklin (spoken by Walter Cronkite) as one of the characters.
Reading Rainbow
The Red Green Show
various British comedies (Keeping Up Appearances, Waiting for God, and The Vicar of Dibley are a few titles I can remember at the moment)
Antiques Roadshow
Rick Steves’ Europe
Great Performances
Austin City Limits (I think that’s the name)
Frontier House
Nature
That’s a sampling of what we like, anyway. Another thing that we enjoy are the local productions like The Blizzard of '78 (we live within viewing range of two PBS stations in two states so we get lots of regional variety, too).
I thought it would be hard to give up satellite programming, but we honestly hardly miss it because we spend so much time watching PBS. (Except when Monk’s on - then I pout.)
DHO! I’m sorry, but should have posted “Your favorite PBS shows for children” But those are great shows I really love “Are you being served?”
Well…
Liberty’s Kids and Reading Rainbow, as I posted before; Arthur; and Nature (I have a kid who’s nuts about animals).
But if I have to hear that “shake your dragon tail” song from Dragon Tales one more time…
Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood. Then, now and forever.
Q
I can’t believe Suse didn’t mention it (all though I’m sure it was simply forgotton) but what about, possibly the best BBC comedy every to be aired on a regular basis on PBS FAWLTY TOWERS!!!
What’s the name of that show? Y’know, the one with the big bird and the green guy in the big metal can?
Reading Rainbow
Sesame Street
Square One
3-2-1 Contact
Mr. Roger’s
The Giant Chickenhawk and Sentient Can of Moldy Spam Show?
Hey, that’s my favorite too!
Oh yeah, gotta second Electric Company, great show, also Square One TV. Mathnet was the shiznit back in the day!
Square One was the best, too bad it doesn’t seem to be on anymore.
Also, not a kids’ show, but we have one called “Rare Visions and Roadside Revelations,” with these three guys in a van who drive around the Midwest and find free folk art. It’s hilarious, and some of the art is really nice too. Some of it’s weird, like the pop bottle windmills and stuff, but some of it, like the grottos, are really nice. It also has a really funny themesong. Oh, and they have a giant ball of video tape that they carry around. It’s about the size of a large beach ball.
Does anyone else know about that show?
Square One was the best. Caught it for the first time in ages one late night on Noggin a while back. I always look for it there, but I think it’s on after my bedtime. And I go to bed around 1am.
Another vote here for Square One.
Nowadays, it’s Nova and Frontline.
Zoom! Come on and zoom a zoom a zoom a zoom…
Now as a grown-up it’s the great Saturday afternoon of cooking shows, Sundays with home improvement series, and then weeknight science and documentaries. Nova, Scientific American, Nature, Burns, etc.
My local PBS isn’t showing any BBC comedies right now.
Wait, they are showing A Fine Romance and As Time Goes By. Great series, both, but man, I’ve seen them both all the way through at least 3 times now. Christ fellas, isn’t it about time to bring back Blackadder? How about the small rouge one?
Liked the old Zoom much better than the recent incarnation. Maybe that’s because I’m not 10 anymore.
The New Yankee Workshop and The Woodwright’s Shop.
Mister Roger’s.
Oh, I LOVED Square One. Mathnet was the best part.
I was also partial to 3-2-1 Contact, The Electric Company and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, though.
The grown-up fare ain’t shabby, either - my favorites of those being Mystery and Ballykissangel (plus assorted Britcoms).
Thank heavens for Public Television. All of you, go out and make a donation, if you haven’t already. PLEASE!

“3-2-1 Contact” was one of my favorites. When I was younger than that I liked watching “Sesame Street” and, of course, “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood.”
There was also a show called “What Will They Think of Next?” I don’t remember if it was on PBS or not, but it was about inventions of the future. I think it aired in the early 80s. I’d like to see re-runs of it now to see if any of the inventions they talked about ever came to be.
I do remember seeing it on Nickelodeon (I think - if not that, it would be TBS) in the early to mid 80s. It might have been on PBS before that, though.
I can’t remember too many of the concepts from the show, but I can’t think of anything that actually hit the big time.
Square One rocked. There used to be a show – not sure if it was local – called “The Magic Door” geared toward Jewish kids. I used to watch that before “Rawhide” on WGN every Sunday.
