At the time of the first movie I thought that Jack Nicholson was too fat and old for the role. I figured James Woods would have been a far better choice.
20-ish years later, Woods is probably too old, and since we can’t nominate Crispin Glover, I’ll go with Ed Norton.

Now that they have made Batman: The Beginning… maybe they can do Batman: The End with Clint Eastwood as Batman and Ron Perlman as The Joker. Huh? Huh?

I think Jude Law is far from being “too pretty” to play the Joker.

(Of course, a two-minute colouring job is no substitute for good prosthetic makeup on an actor in character.)

If “pretty” guys couldn’t pull off intimidating, then Christian Bale would hardly work as Batman. The Joker isn’t intimidating because he’s ugly – he’s intimidating because he’s batshit crazy, cunning, armed, physically fit, and has an army of loyal goons.

Get somebody who can act the part and you can sell “intimidating.” For me, Jude Law would work because he’s a great physical actor, and the one feature that he has that wouldn’t be obscured by make-up are perfect. While his eyes are often doing that easy “come fuck me” thing, he’s quite capable of putting an icy, bone-chilling “I’m just crazy enough to eat your eyes out through your arsehole” look into them. That’d work.

Not to mention that he’s starting to resemble Jack Nicholson. Give him about 10 to 15 years, and the resemblance will be downright scary.

If not Jude, though, I’m voting for Hamill.

I’ve always thought Dick Van Dyke would be great as the Joker. He has the physique, the face, and the manic, physical energy. His age could be an asset, making the Joker more sinister. I could really see him being perfect.
