Hey! You! Post Here If You Plan to Attend ChiDope in May 2003.

After long (and occasionally alcohol-fueled) discussions with **Gundy, Porcupine, Hamlet ** and others, we’ve tentatively agreed upon Black Rock as the central site of this year’s Chidope. For those of you who aren’t playing at home (and why haven’t you been?), we’re talking about Saturday, 5/10/03. This post deals with Saturday night only, and not Friday pizza, tattoo/sex toy/piercing side trips, the Museum of Science and Industry, or the contemporaneous visit of the evil St. Louis National League Baseball Club. Also, we defer to the beautiful and accomplished Jane D’Oh with respect to lodging alternatives.

Further, to save the [suckup] hard-working moderators [/suckup] from unneccesary effort, we refer Gentle Reader to the Straight Dope’s disclaimer about member get-togethers, a disclaimer which **Gundy, Porcupine, Hamlet ** and I (even those of us who aren’t lawyers) heartily endorse, join in, and repeat. Short version - None of us are the hosts of this event, and anything we are doing is merely to gratuitously faciilitate this occasion on behalf of Dopers generally. We’re not going to check IDs, blood-alcohol levels or the criminal histories of those attending. What you do at and after this event is between you, your diety (if any) , the bar, your parole officer, and those members of Chicago’s Finest who aren’t otherwise occupied trying to keep Lake Shore Drive open. We encourage all those present to drink responsibly, and to follow all laws of the State of Illinois, except those which deal with biblically-condemned sexual practices. We’re doing this, not to create disorder, but to preserve disorder (or something like that, anyway.)

Now that all of that’s dealt with, here’s what we’ve discussed. Black Rock has offered to provide its party room, with an open bar(including top-shelf brands and excluding only shots) for three hours for $25 per person. Given the history of past SDMB events, the bar search committee views this as a ludicrously-amazing deal. I’ve paid more than this to buy a round at 6-person pre-Dopefest events. (I’ve already alerted bankruptcy counsel to contact bar management immediately following the evening.) The bar does require a 40-person minimum for the deal, as well as a deposit. If there’s a reasonable response to this e-mail, the committee will deal with this detail on behalf of the multitudes.

Assuming that the night and rate are still available, we’d like some feedback before reserving the room on behalf of the membership. First, we need a roll call of those attending and willing to pay the per-person price. (Sorry, but the bar can’t make exceptions for those who are light/nondrinkers. It’s all or nothing. If that presents a real problem for someone, I’m sure that the historically-generous Doper community will step in.)

If we get at least 45 responses, we’ll book the room. We do still need to work out some details with the bar. The price may go up a buck or two after we resolve these issues. (Most of these have to do with the mechanics of assessing the charge. None of us want to be collecting money, counting attendees, turning away crashers, or arguing with people who think they’re entitled to a discount.) If the bar won’t do this, we intend to pass on the deal. We’re only considering this package alternative because it seems to make economic sense. If it becomes logistically or legally difficult, we’ll have to recommend a different and more expensive proposal.

Second, if the bar will agree, we’d like to have some basic food (probably pizza) available at some point. Would you be interested in this alternative, assuming an extra cost of $5-$10? (Again, your deal would be with the bar, not the SDMB or the search committee.)

Third, the offer is for 3 hours. We’re considering 8-11 or 9-12. Comments?

Black Rock is located on Damen, just north of Addison. That’s about 2-3 blocks from a Brown Line stop, and a short cab/bus ride from the Addison stops on the Red and Blue lines. (The trip from these stops is walkable, but a fair hike.) It’s a non-dive bar, with a decent selection of beer and cider on tap. Other members of the search commitee have commented favorably on the couches, fireplaces and woodwork. No opinion at this point on its Martinis or other mixed drinks. Although it’ll be a huge imposition, some of us are considering another investigatory visit later this week to look into this and other issues. Anyone interested in joining us should let us know.

I care not for food, but at $25 for three hours of beer, I think I can bankrupt the buggerers.

I missed one point, which Hamlet correctly raises in an e-mail. The per-person price should include an appropriate tip. I suggest a $4 bump for this purpose.

I am completely in agreement with myself. I think I’m right when I said that the drink deal is the best way to go. I will be taking the El, which will greatly increase my consumption, and I think I can drink through $25 in about 1 1/2 minutes if I really tried. I think it makes the most economic sense.

This is for that Saturday night, so while people are posting their votes/roll call on attendence, anyone who has questions or recommendations for Friday night can ask them here too. And a thank you to Random for checking out the info on the bar deal.

I think this sound like a great deal, and I’m all for it.

Also, I’d vote for the 8-11 slot - that seemed to work out fine last time. Some people (gasp) actually seemed ready to leave by then, and even though the room was technically thrown open to the public, not one non-doper ventured in.

Sounds good to me!

Any recommendations for out-of-towners as to where to stay that’s cheap, somewhat close, and reasonably not-scary?

I hereby bestow the Zanshin Seal of Approval™ upon the above-referenced plan of action. The 8-11 slot at Black Rock sounds perfect (and I would add my vote in for food. I think after a couple hours of drinking we’ll all have some serious munchies). I’m in.

Are there still thoughts of doing pizza before the main event at Black Rock? Pizza sets a really good base for alcohol.

Avarie, most out-of-towners are staying near O’Hare. Jane D’oh! has arranged for a really good group rate.

Once I can finalize some details, I’m in.

I’m in, and I’m pleased to say that it’s RIGHT BY MY HOUSE. F-ing Awesome. I may even be able to convince Mr. Jar to participate.

Random, I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment, and place my vote for the mind-bogglingly good deal of $25 for three hours. I will be there, natch, but my SO KrustyKlown will likely be out of town and therefore will probably not attend.

I’ll volunteer to start a cell-phone list of attending Dopers for pre-main event organizational purposes. Send 'em to me, folks!

Normally I’d vote 9-12 but I’ll defer to porcupine’s judgment on the time slot.

As far as pre-event pizza, Random and I agree that it’s probably best to leave that as a loose gathering rather than planning for a private room and all that requires, particularly since the intention is to have a family-friendly component to the ChiDope weekend. The way I see that Saturday shaping up for me is a mid-morning museum visit followed by a mid-afternoon pizza gathering downtown, leaving enough time to get back home/to the hotel to drop off the kids (if any) and get ready for Black Rock. If I can get a read on how many Dopers are interested in meeting for pizza then I can suggest a good place to meet.

It’s four blocks from my house. I can be kicked home, if necessary, and sustain minimal damage. What a…coincidence.

I’m about a mile and a half away. Sucks, doesn’t it?

I’m playing some telephone tag with the bar guy to try to address the remaining issues (and to make sure the night is still available), but expect that I’ll be visiting in person one night this week. Thinking about tomorrow or Thursday. Anyone interested?

(As I think that the presence of several Beautiful Doper Women during the last scouting mission may have had something to do with the good terms we were offered, their attendance is especially encouraged. Hard to believe a bar would be influenced like that, ain’t it?)

Keep the replies coming. The sooner we hit our number, the faster we can save the room.

Well, as some of you saw on Friday, $25 from me will definitely be subsidizing someone else’s drinking habit, but that’s a small price to pay to ensure that the foolhardy, ummm, I mean magnanimous and wise bar owner isn’t left bankrupted by this shindig. Count me in, and for food, too. (Y’all saw how well I fared on a couple of drinks and no food. Maybe pizza will mitigate matters. Someone make sure they have my home address before the festivities commence in earnest; it’s a short cab ride away. Just pile me in, and I’ll be OK from there.)

I tried to compose a wittier response at about 3:30 this morning (damn insomnia!), but the hamsters ate it. In any case, count me in.

Folks who’d like to go to the Wild Goose for Dinner, Bulgarian Waitresses and a cocktail or two before the party can email me and we’ll get a group together. Then we can caravan via bus or cab down to the Black Rock (which is about ten or fifteen minutes away)

Thursday’s good for me, Random.

I’ll cross my fingers they have the pear cider back by the time May 10th rolls around, but if not, I’m certainly capable of sucking down a lot of High Life in three hours. 8-11 sounds great.

Perhaps the heralded Spam musubi will make an appearance, for those into adventurous munchables.

So, Judith, $25 worth of High Life, is what, 50 bottles including tip?

I almost don’t want to mention this, but if folks were so inclined, Black Rock is amenable to bringing in food, so we could have hors d’oeuvres…

$25 is a steal. I’m in.
