Would washing it down with a French beer make it any better?
I’m taking the long way from Minneapolis – driving down to Tierra del Fuego and taking a tramp steamer back up to Canadia and down on the St Lawrence, then winding my way through the Great Lakes. I should arrive around May 15th.
Maybe in 2005 …
I know about Gary. I was born there and lived one city over for 22 years. What I didn’t know was if their airport would allow him to land there.
I bet flying into the airport there is safe. I’m sure there’s good access to the expressway without needing to go through the bad neighborhoods. You just wouldn’t want to be at, say, 5th & Broadway after dark!
I’m in. And we’re talking definitely the 10th of May, right? Thank god. That works sooooo much better for me.
Jane D’Oh: Which hotel again?
Here’s the update before a new thread is started:
Random and I have found a place that is warm, charming, and available. Emphasis on available. We’re pretty sure this will be the place: The Grafton pub at 4530 N. Lincoln.
More details later.
Unless someone has some major problem with the Grafton, I plan to confirm our reservation there and cancel the provisional hold we have on Windy City. (I’ll probably do this tomorrow afternoon, so speak now or forever hold your peace.)
As Gundy says, The Grafton looks like a great site. We do not plan to do a package deal. (We perhaps could get one for about $42 a person. As that seems a bit rich to impose on the [one or two] nondrinkers in the group, and also because money collection is a hassle we want to avoid, we decided not to go that route.)
It’s not the cheapest bar in the world, but we think it’s worth it. Windy City would have been less expensive (as well as amazingly geographically desireable for Gundy and me), but WC is pretty much of a dive.
The Brown Line has nearby stops. Getting Blue Line (O’Hare) people there will be more complicated. We’ll have to give that some more thought. (Maybe cabs or buses from the Irving stop?)
Sounds good to me! Actual food, a 5-minute drive from my apartment, and as a very, very light drinker, no requirement to shell out major bucks for items I won’t consume.
What’s the deal with the room?
There’s a back room with tables, couches and a fireplace that they can block off for us. Cute bartenders of both sexes, for those who care. There aren’t the typical bar accoutrements – darts & pool, f’rinstance – but it’s very conducive to conversation. Food reviews in Metromix are all good (and from what I saw, it looked pretty tasty.)
There’s no fee for the room reservation, but of course we’d ask folks to chip in for the gratuity.
Note to under-21 Dopers:
Garfield, being a smart little cookie, called The Grafton and verified with the owner that they were willing to provide wristbands to underage attendees to signify they aren’t drinking. So everyone can attend!
Considering that The Grafton is only about four or five blocks from my house, this is ideal. I may wander over in the next week or two and check it out myself.
Sounds good to this kid. Of couse, I don’t think I have much say since Gundy is pretty much my wife for the weekend.
T.
…and the whole ChiDope plan gets debated, revised, updatedm, and finalized. Wowsers! (okay, maybe it’s been more like a few weeks since i last had the chance to hang around here, but it sounded better the way i said it).
Pretty sure i’m not already booked for that weekend so go ahead and put me down for it too. Will be great to finally get some faces to put with the names.
btw, any other central IL area pplz interested in carpooling on up to Chi-town for this shindig?

The garbage needs to be taken out, but it’ll wait until you get here.
I’m on it.
Heeeey, just how far do my husband privileges go?
Well, I guess I just don’t really know what to make of that.
Does this mean I can sleep in the center of the bed?
Huh…the post is not where I left it.
Chasing after my misplaced posts…just one of your many husbandly duties.
Geez, you two, get a room!
(So if I show up early on Friday to heat up plov or butcher the camel, am I going to be interrupting anything?)
No, not at all. Seriously, Gundy will have me take out the trash and make the bed. That’s the sad thing.
I dunno, Eva Luna, “heating up plov” sounds pretty dirty to me…
