For those of you who have been thinking “Yanno, there’s been something … missing … from my Dope experience recently…” – yes, I’ve been on vacation. Just got back, have read most of my email (and trashed far more of it without reading…), and the first load of laundry is in the washer.
Here’s the payoff of last night’s dream:
If Bugs Bunny went on a mad digging spree in Monument Valley, might you describe that as having a wild hare up one’s butte?
So…what did you do? Were you an avid hiker/swimmer/surfer/hang-glider or were you a garden variety slug?
Laugh, but just yesterday, I actually did a search on your name because I thought:
“Hey, where’s whatshername been?”
Yup.
So how’d you like Deptford?
I was downtheshore – my annual week in Cape May, New Jersey. This was the 11th years with the same core group of people – the final slot has been a changing cast of characters, but this year’s auditioners have indicated they want to come back next year, so that’s good.
My vacations consist of reading, sleeping, and going to the beach – where I read and sleep. Maintained a slightly better than book-a-day pace – and a slightly better than nap-a-day pace too, for that matter (dozed off twice on the beach a few times… ah, bliss).
Yes, it was hotter than hell – no, the house doesn’t have a/c – but the water was cold, so that felt great (and kept the jellyfish at bay, though I did get stung once).
And now it’s time to go put in another load of wash…
Hey pseud – I was going to email you and thank you profusely for insisting that I read it. I liked it very much.
Which of his books do I read next?
I’m in the middle of the WHAT’S BRED IN THE BONE, which isn’t quite as compelling but still is pretty good. Also THE SALTERTON TRILOGY is pretty good, I hear.
Wow, that confused me for a minute. All I could think was “What the heck? Deptford is nowhere near Cape May”…
If you lived in Maryland, you would say you had been “Downey ocean, Hon.” With a certain nasal twang to that “O” in ocean.
We don’t go to the shore, we go to the ocean.
Just sharing.
I LOVE Cape May!
A friend of my dad’s who was a cop in Upper Darby has a place there. I’ve been out that way probably 4-5 times since I was a kid. Nowadays, Romeo just summers there, he “winters” in Florida, but now with my sister moving back to DC, I see more summer trips east for us, so perhaps another trip to the shore is coming next summer.
I’ll call ya.
Actually, Deptford is the top of Rte. 55, where I hang a left to head home…
Did you get a chance to read City of God? What did ya think?
Nope – not yet – still have a week and a half on the library loan, though.
Gee, I thought you meant this Deptford.
So that was what was missing last week. The board seem somehow lifeless but I could not figure out what it was.
Jim
So, just What Exit is Cape May? HAR! I crack me up!
Twicks welcome back. I do a trip somewhere every year to hang out a few days with a group of old college buddies. It’s always fun.
It’s actually Exit 0 – and so reads the sticker on my car.
[eerie séance voice]It is beyond the Last Exit of the Parkway. [/esv]
You take the Garden State Parkway south to the beginning of the Parkway. the last exit is 4. You continue straight down 106 & 633 to Cape May.
Jim
Me, too. I was expecting an extremely subtle Christopher Marlowe joke.
