I think it’s like an old building. Sure, you want to tear it down right now to build a new parking lot. But one day, you’ll look back wistfully and speak fondly of Hi Opal. And by then, you’ll be tired of your parking lot. New people come in all the time. Part of SD’s charm is its rich history of quirky little things, and it’s fun to explain them to newbies. If it dies, let it die. But I wouldn’t kill it.

Why be annoyed by it? It’s one of those things like Pie and All your bases, that makes Straight Dope into a community. Without such things this would soon become just a questions and answers forum with little character of its own. It isn’t exactly funny, but that’s not the point.
I did like the Hi Libertarian alternative posted some short time ago in a thread of probable interest to Libertarian though.

No, it’s not. It’s one of those things that makes a community irritating. It’s not funny; it’s tedious mind-numbing repetition. What makes this a community is the wide range of intelligently expressed opinions, the clever wit and yeah, even the artful excoriations that take place here in the pit. That’s what makes this a community, not seeing the same tired old shit day after day.
