hiccup cures

I was a bartender for over 10 years. Several different bars, different people.Bikers to Bankers. I saw a lot of people with hiccups and I have heard about a lot of cures.
One I was taught by an old crabby bar maid was this:

1 lemon wedge ( little, size of a nickle maybe, but fat. The kind we squeezed and dropped into the drink. Not the slice you put in the rim of the glass to make it look pretty)
sprinkled generously with sugar
then sprinkle bitters on top of the sugar. ( Bitters is liquid)

eat only the fruit part of the lemon( sugar and bitters, obviously)
but not the rind. ( I did have to stop people from this sometimes)

Now maybe it was because all those hiccups were in the same type of environment, or pretty much induced by the same problems.
But it worked every single time.
My average here came out to 1560 people with hiccups in a 10 year period of time.
(At 3 people a week with hiccups) It was more, I’m sure.

I made good money telling people I could get rid of those hiccups immediately.
Well, I take that back there was a guy, old, old guy, who had to eat 2 lemon wedges.

It was a fun job

Looks like it doesn’t cure *every *hiccup.

One thing I’ve used with invariable success for 50+ years is a teaspoon of sugar. It’s also worked for family members.

I saw a report of a scientific paper in the last two or three years that claimed to validate this cure. The authors said they didn’t expect success when they started.

I’ve always held my breath. Seems to work and you don’t need any supplies. Lying down, if possible, seems to help, also.

I had a roommate in college who taught me to take deep breaths in and out, very slowly, through my mouth. After a few minutes, they’re gone. It’s the only cure for hiccups that ever worked for me.
