Hiccups

What are they all about? And why when I take Aleve or the generic kind do I ALWAYS get them?
How do you get rid of them? Holding your breath doesn’t help me, nor a paper bag, nor drinking water from the wrong side of the glass nor sugar…I just wait for the to go away in an hour or two or three…

a trick that never fails: take a butter knife and put it blade down in a short cup of water… then put the handle in the middle of your forehead when you drink it.

abracadabra no more hiccups!

Eating a spoonfull of peanut butter always does the trick. Never fails…

Bread with a lot of butter on it.

Fill a glass with water, place it on a table and put a straw in the glass. Now, standing over the glass tightly place both your fingers in your ears and use the straw to drink all the water in the glass without stopping. My girlfriend taught me this method and it has worked every time I tried it.

take a sharp knife, such as a paring knife.
place it in a glass full of water, and sprinkle a little bit of salt inside.

beging drinking the water with your eyes closed.

as you are drinking, try and grab the knife with your left hand.

while holding the knife, and drinking the water, say ‘moose’.

Hiccups are muscular spasms in the diaphragm, caused by stimulation to the nerves in the esophagus. Think of them as a minor organic version of the Heimlich Maneuver. The pills you have swallowed are probably still slowly moving down your esophagus, triggering the response.

All the methods people claim are sure fire are sure fire for them, because they have found a set of stimuli which relax the musculature of the throat and chest sufficiently to allow the constriction in the esophagus to move downward (peristalisis) and end the stimulus which initiates the hiccups. Here is a method that will work, if you do as I say. (I have found it most difficult to get people to actually try, and completely simple to accomplish if they trust me.)

For some, it works best if you have a voice you trust repeating these instructions, or a tape of your own voice, if that is what it takes to get your trust. If your hiccups are very rapid, you may feel frustrated, as it takes a moment or two for the method to work. Don’t despair, just keep on going, letting it happen, it will work, when you finish the entire exercise.

Sit, or stand with very good posture. Eyes closed, head erect, back straight. Rotate your shoulders upward, and then back, and then let them fall slowly down to a completely relaxed position. Relax your facial muscles, letting your cheeks fall, and your jaw fall open. Feel the sensation of your muscles getting soft. Let your neck muscles relax, and your shoulders drop even further. You can feel the tension in your throat muscles, and let them relax as well. Now let your chest muscles go limp. Think about swallowing. (It is not necessary to swallow, but it doesn’t matter if you do.) You will now be able to feel tightness somewhere in your throat. It will slowly move downward, passing through your chest, on to your stomach. When it gets below your heart, you will no longer have the Hiccups.

I am acutely aware of the fact that the marriage between mathematics and physics, which was so enormously fruitful in past centuries, has recently ended in divorce.

Thanks for the info. They are gone now. But anyhow how come it is only Aleve that causes it consistantl. I chew the pills (can’t swallow pills). And whether it is generic Naproxen, regular Aleve or the prescription form they all cause it
