I’m looking to buy a micro HiFi system (The disdain of any HiFi buffs who would like to suggest isolated tables, directional platinum cables, expensive separates, ceramic nano-monofilament speakers etc. is assumed, thanks).
Anyway, I don’t have a DVD player, so I thought I’d get a system that incorporates DVD too (I need tuner/CD/Cassette/DVD).
But it would seem that all of the DVD Micro systems are single region(2) only, which isn’t much use to me as I own a couple of region 1 DVDs (which were only available in region 1 and I have as yet only watched on my PC, obviously).
So, is there a micro system out there that fulfils my somewhat demanding specifications (as well as not costing the earth?
Option 2 will be to get an ordinary micro system plus an ordinary multi-region DVD player, but then I’ll have to bollocks about with all kinds of extra cables to get them integrated.
Option 2 is probably worth while, though have you thought of getting a surround sound system? Get hold of What HiFi magazine and look in the back section for old review scores. Denon seems to be doing some good midi systems these days. It all depends of course on how much you want to spend, as allways. Multi-region ‘upgradeable’ dvd players are very cheap in USA $40-$80 some have switchable power to work at UK voltage. I don’t know about their availability in UK, but I susspect if you ask arround you’ll find them.
You might try www.richersounds.co.uk - they seem to carry quite a lot of stuff. I’ve bought from them before & they seem to know what they’re talking about. I had a flyer in the post the other day from them advertising their cheapest region 2 dvd players at 39 quid and multi-region at 49 (don’t know if those prices are mirrored online, but they’ve certainly got a reputation for being amongst the better value retailers)…
Can’t help you with the cassette, and it’s a bit pricey, but the Tivoli Model 2 is a great sounding little radio and you can hook up a CD/DVD player to it if you want.
Very nice, clean sound, not overpowering, but great for a little box.
One of the DVD micro systems (made by LG in this case) had 5.1 surround sound as standard, it just isn’t multi-region and doesn’t appear to be modifiable.
I’d suggest going to a store (real or on-line) and writing down the make/model numbers. Then Google any system you like to find out if it can be enabled to be multi region and how to do it. You probably don’t want to get one which needs to be chipped or require a universal remote.
