High Blood Pressure or Transient Ischemic Attack Specialist?

What type of specialist would someone with high blood pressure or TIA see? One of my friend’s say a Cardiologist, another one says Neurologist. Who’s correct?

Rather obviously, someone with High Blood Pressure would not see a neurologist. IAMNAMD, but it seems to me plain ordinary High Blood Pressure would be dealt with by your GP. Since a TIA is a “mini-stroke”, a neurologist might be more likely there, but again IAMNAMD.

Depends on the situation.

If we’re talking chronic hypertension, you’d mostly likely see an internist. If we’re talking hypertension with some sort of heart disease, possibly a cardiologist, depending on the case and your primary care physician’s comfort level dealing with your specific problem. If we’re talking about being in the hospital after a TIA, you’d be seen by whoever’s dealing with the hypertension, plus you’d probably get a neuro consult.

I would say that both hypertension and TIA’s are “bread and butter” internal medicine problems. So, I’d suggest an internist for both. This would save one consultation and also provide for more integrated care from square one.
