Anybody else spend time in Athens, GA in the 80’s? That was ground zero for the best of the 80’s, IMHO.
Blue- I never made it to L’Amour, either, but I remember my cousin frequenting it, and Danceteria, and a few others. BTW-Love the sig.
We do need to get the ball rolling on a NY get together, I think the East Village would be fantastic. I’m thinking early April.
I like it here-can I stay?
And do you have a vacancy for a Back-scrubber?
I’m in–but please don’t make me wear that outfit I just described. Please.
Canvas shoes with no laces (Keds, please).
Inside-out sweatshirts.
Pulling a corner of your t-shirt through a plastic belt buckle.
Pastel-colored stretch jeans.
Weaving friendship bracelets in class.
Doughnut bangs.
Rooster bangs.
Embroidered vests.
Shoulder pads.
Mock turtlenecks.
Debbie Gibson.
Wilson Philips.
Fifty gajillion silver bracelets.
Ring watches.
Any movie with Tom Cruise.
Puttin’ on the Hits
upturned collars
blue eyeliner
mall bangs (poofed up and back on top, down and curled in front, with a sort of sideways part. Looked retarded from the side)
lopsided “skater” haircuts (like a bob but longer on one side)
Tron was a really cool video game and the movie ROCKED!!
Reading sneak previews for Revenge of the Jedi, and then hearing they change the name to “Return of the Jedi” and being kind of disappointed
Pat Benatar
Silver Spoons
Family Ties
Jelly everything (shoes, jewelry, purses)
skin tight pants (I MISS TIGHT CUFFS!!!)
The Noid
Bon Jovi and Cinderella
Aquanet
plastic dangle earrings
colored hair gel
black and white checkerboard Vans sneakers (jr high)
high tops
pony tails on the crown of your head
Depeche Mode was a cool new(ish) band
Sting started his solo career
The Superbowl Shuffle
Didn’t the Simpsons start in 1990? So does that count as “the late 80s”?
I remember hanging out with a friend over at my apartment anxiously awaiting the opening Simpsons episode… it was gonna be great that “that short cartoon thing from the Tracey Ulman show” was getting it’s own show!

From an actual catalog: “Disco balls create an enchanting, dazzling effect of light shafts, adding movement and glamour to any occasion”
the Abrams’ bris was certainly memorable

Ooooh! Local radio station versions of the song “We Built This City” by Starship" where the dj sticks your city name in the little fake dj section of the song…

How about those girls’ t-shirts that had “HEAVEN” emblazoned across the front?
“My hovercraft is full of eels.”
ROFL! That sucked so bad! I remember groaning when I heard our station do that…
re: the simpsons…I’m thinking they must’ve started maybe '88 or so because I remember the shirts being “banned” (or at least talk of it happening somewhere) when I was in school and I graduated in '89. (I was sorta stunned that we couldn’t wear “Underachiever and Proud of it!” but no one got hassled for wearing that Guns ‘n’ Roses tour shirt with the raped girl on the back – WTF?)
Shine on, you crazy diamond!
Oh, I forgot!

The Young ones? I think that was the name of the show. It was on MTV, with four guys in London. One of them had four stars in his forehead. I though it was funny as hell.
The Misfits

Did anyone else besides Bettendorf, Ia and Oskosh Wi have a teen club that was put on television. It was called the Dance Machine. That was pretty cool!
Boy George
Axle Rose
Vince Neil
Still thinking of more to add.

Mmmmm… Young Ones. Another one of those zany British comedies. Want some lentils?

Thank you opal! I was hoping that someone else remembered that show. Was it really that funny, or am I just tht twisted?
Back when Matt Groening was the “Life in Hell” guy–probably part of why some people freaked at The Simpsons
metal bands in leopard-skin tights
skater hair, skater shoes–I loved 'em–still like’em, but I never had any balance; so I was a “poser”
baggy pants rolled tight at the ankle–the return of straight-leg still hasn’t sunk in for me.
“In my nightmares I am chased by algorithms”–crewman Celes, ST:V
The Young Ones was really that funny.
Class of '88, Kimball HS, Royal Oak, MI.
I remember (and I hope I’m not duplicating):
Matching your socks to your shirt (though I wore all black, so it was a non-issue).
The moonwalk!
The Cure, The Cult, Siouxsie and The Banshees, The Smiths, REM when they were still a college band, Depeche Mode, Peter Murphy.
The invention of mousse…for your hair!
Wine coolers (who were those Seagram’s guys?)
Perky breasts (mine…so sad.)
A woman needs four animals in her life: A mink in the closet, a Jaguar in the garage, a tiger in the bedroom, and an ass to pay for it all.

Class of '88, Warren Township High School, Gurnee IL.
-I remember matching my socks to my shirt, and having an enormous collection of big cheap earrings in various colors so I could match my earrings to my shirt and socks, too.
-Forenza sweaters with the giant V neck, with a tank top of a contrasting color underneath. (match the tank to your earrings and socks.)
-Buttons, buttons, buttons. So many dozens of buttons that your everyday jacket was transformed into a bullet-proof vest.
-My parachute pants had the special feature of legs I could zip off to turn them into shorts.
-Great big white high top shoes.
-Rocky Horror
-As an alternative to the traditional painfully-tight legged jeans, you could wear baggy Lee jeans. With pinstripes.
-Some of my jeans were so tight, they came with zippered calves because otherwise, the leg holes would be too small to fit over your feet. My legs hurt just thinking about it- I’m surprised I don’t have permanent, vertical dents on my inner calves where the seams dug into my flesh.
-miniskirts!
Despite all this, I hated high school. sigh
lol, Sue…I think you’re thinking of Bartles & Jaymes (sp?) "We thank you for your support!)
Did anyone say yet:
"What. Would. You say…I should do at this moment…while you’re standing beside me. With TEAAAARS in your eye… A very special “Family Ties” indeed! HA!
Now there’s nothing unexpected about the water giving out; “Land” is not a word we have to shout.
I have that album… Billy Vera rules!
Goodness Gracious, Holly! I forgot about that all that color-matching. Conveniently, I wore black all the time and my mommy wouldn’t buy me Forenza sweaters…
Class of '87 here.
This is great. I’ll try to think of some new ones:
Styrofoam boxes at McD’s (putting the fries in the top)
3.2 beer
Fright Night
Friday Night Videos (before MTV)
'Til Tuesday
INXS
Thanks for all the memories.
Meeemmmoriiieeeeesss in the corners of our minds, Misty water colored meeemoriiees of the way we were.
Sorry guys, I just had to do it. I have had that song in my head all day, and just knew that this was the place to put it!
You guys still love me right?

BTW I couldn’t remember the words to Kodachrome, or it would have been worse if that is possible.
