One of those is from when she was 21, and for her very first movie. I think she gets a pass on that one. One is for a controversial and polarizing film where some people hated her in the role and other people loved her in the role (I loved her in the role). The third one is for…THE FIFTH ELEMENT?? Get outta here! She was great in The Fifth Element.
She may or may not be a great actress, I don’t know. I think she does well in what I’ve seen and I haven’t seen a lot of her movies. But, those Razzie nominations are undeserved and not worth the paper on the press release when the nominations were sent out.
(full disclosure: I’m biased because I met her and she’s the sweetest person, just lovely. And I love her music.)
If I were to come up with a new rating, Personality/Looks/Acting skills, Milla would be a 10/10/7 at this point.
Catherine Zeta-Jones. Amazingly beautiful and an Oscar winner.
Also, I haven’t seen either of them lately, but I’ve always been fond of Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Madeline Stowe. Both are gorgeous and talented.
OK, the nomination for The Fifth Element was admittedly unfair. She’s certainly seems to have improved since The Return to the Blue Lagoon, the trailer for which has to be the single most emetic 1 minute and 41 seconds of film committed to celluloid that I can think of. And I’m including 2g1c.
I still don’t feel she’s comparable to acting greatness however.
I note that for two of the same performances for which she was given Razzie awards (The Fifth Element, Resident Evil), she was also awarded Best Actress awards (the Saturn award for performance in a science fiction film). :dubious:
Milla’s performance in The Fifth Element was remarkable. (I haven’t seen Resident Evil.)
I loved Milla Jovovich in Joan of Arc - it was the great Dustin Hoffman who stunk up that particular flick. On the basis of that alone I’ll rate her a talented actress.
I also think Brad Pitt is talented but “phones in” a lot of his work. When he gets a good part, he definitely makes the most of it.
I don’t know about 1/1 but there’s a few in this thread that would get low marks from me. Winona Ryder? Wholly unappealing to me. Ditto Vigo Mortensen.
(Not offense meant to those that nominated them)
Do they have to have been stars? I was watching Our Vines Have Tender Grapes the other night and was thinking what a crappy actor Jackie “Butch” Jenkins was. Apparently some people thought he was cute, but he grossed me out, especially in National Velvet when he kept talking about throwing up and killing bugs.
I think Julia is one of those A-list actors who is very good at playing herself (like Jack Nicholson). Even her oscar-winning performance was Julia with blond hair, a push-up bra, and a more abrasive attitude than usual.
An actress who I think doesn’t get enough respect is Jennifer Lopez. She’s done some very good work, and never looks like she’s acting. She’s okay looking, too.
Brad Pitt was my immediate thought on reading the thread title.
After mulling it over for a day or two, I’ll add Tom Cruise to the list. Crazy as a shithouse rat, but the guy can definitely act. And he was a huge sex symbol before his crazy spilled all over Orca’s couch.
