I think the OP meant the surname held by the highest percentage of a country’s population.

how about mohammed? (sp?) that seems pretty common to me…

This website lists some relevant surname statistics, including :
50% of the population of China shares one of the 20 most common surnames. There are only 3,100 surnames currently used in China.

The majority of the population of Korea shares five surnames.
According to this Korean government website (search ‘surname’, since it’s a long page), marriage among people who shared the same last name was only legalized in 1996!

Interesting. Do these Proudfoots tend to be short and have hairy feet?

I’ve read in a couple of different places in the past that the most common surname in the world is Chang (Zhang), and the most common first name is Mohammed. Oddly, though, you meet surprisingly few Mohammed Changs…
