Which statements are you referring to in particular? All the statements of Webb on Syria I’ve seen are sceptical of intervention and criticize previous administrations for destabilizing the Middle East.
I’d prefer all the Confederate flags on public grounds go down, but in the big picture its not even in the top one hundred of important and/or relevant issues especially when he has literally no control over this question.
EDIT: If its with regards to Webb’s opposition on the Iran Deal, I agree its a very unfortunate stance but its not as if plenty of other Democrats (ie Chuck Schumer) are also against the deal.
Webb is a real man, he is tough. He may be a good choice. He’s Southern. The Democrats may need Southern in 2016. He doesn’t like politics however, but a Clinton/Webb ticket would be formidable.
I already have a DINO Congressman whom I refuse to vote for (California has top two general elections and open primaries), I don’t want a candidate for VP that pretends to be a Democrat when agrees with all of the Republican platform points.
Who is this “DINO Congressman” if this isn’t too personal a question? At any rate, Jim Webb agrees with something like 80-85% of the Democratic platform, excepting a few issues where he dissents more due to his cultural and geographic background as a Scotch-Irish Appalachian military man.
I’m a real man too, and I’m tough, and I served in the armed forces like Webb (Navy for me), and I think his position on many of the issues would greatly weaken America. I think it’s very unlikely Clinton would choose him, and I’m glad of this.
As opposed to issues like incarceration reform? And again, I’ve said that I favour the Rebel flag going down and indeed have sparred with other Dopers about the issue. However, bringing down every Confederate flag on public grounds is not going to improve the lot of the average black person one iota and I decline to factor it in my judgement of a candidate especially in light of said candidate’s ethnic and geographic background and his record on other issues.
The Democrats may need more national security experience on the ticket. It may need reinforcements. Someone I like is former Indiana congressman Timothy Roemer, the former 9/11 commission member and former Ambassador to India. He was on Obama’s veep list in 2008 and may help Hillary Clinton with independent voters and Rust-Belt voters. Democrats NEED Rust Belt voters.
You can’t be fucking serious. You can’t be. You cannot be serious.
You really think that the supporting the display of a racist symbol by a local, state, or federal government of the United States is unimportant to your view of a candidate?
To come up with a few issues off the top of my head: policy towards the middle east, global climate change, incarceration reform, student debt reform, and displaying confederate flags on public grounds. Where would I put the confederate flag issue? In a presidential campaign? Dead fucking last. I’m not sure I could take you seriously if you’d claim you’d rank it elsewhere in that list.
I don’t see it like that – flags aren’t that important. But seeing it the way Webb does shows an incredible ignorance of history, or an incredible disinterest in the legitimate concerns of black people. Both are pretty close to deal-breakers, and would be if the Republican candidates weren’t so much worse.
Qin Shi Huangdi has stated that it’s not even in the top hundred of his concerns. You’ve only listed five.
Frankly, of the five you did list, the removal of racist symbols on government grounds in the United States would rank #2, behind only climate change. You think that incarceration reform is more important than removing the symbols that caused the need for incarceration reform? You’re thinking backwards.
