Hip Hop radio playlists

They seem to run at most ten or fifteen different songs in rotation. Even in the bad old days of top 40 radio, the playlists were longer. Yet the kids these days seem to like a steady diet of it. WTF? Aside from taste, if I liked that kind of music, I would sure get sick of it the way the radio stations program it. Yet the format seems to do well in the ratings. Are kids today that dull that they want to hear the same damn songs repeated every hour?

WAG: Most people today have MP3s, Ipods, and the like so that they would generally only listen to radios for an extended period of time when they’re in the car. The radio stations play the same dozen very popular songs over and over again because each individual listener would not listen for long enough to become bored by the repetition. Thus, if they only play the popular songs, they will more likely catch someone whose channel surfing’s (does that term apply to radios?) attention.

Yes, but other formats don’t have the same heavy rotations.

WAG: Urban consumers have shorter drives to work.

Sounds like a question for Cafe Society. Moved.
