LOL. I guess I struck a nerve.
Always a polite thing to do in the middle of conversation. This issue you’re trying to prod me with doesn’t bother me, which is why I feel no need to speak to it. Your tone bothers me - I did nothing rude and don’t appreciate being treated rudely.
You’re not being treated rudely. You voiced derision for some vague cohort. I merely pointed out how your behavior implies your belonging to that cohort. You found this offensive because you didn’t want to be judged as the thing you were deriding.
Because the judging was done with no context being sought in a civil way. I’m 46, live in the suburbs and am 25 pounds overweight. When I find a hat that actually works, I am a lucky man - and trust me, I don’t look hip. I have been wearing variants of porkpies and other hats since college, have tried a ton of hats and admittedly looked like a dork - which is different than a douchebag; dorks are trying to emulate their hat-wearing heros like Mike Lieber (of Lieber and Stoller, the songwriting team behind Hound Dog and so many others) and Thelonius Monk - but hopelessly naive in their attempt. I’m that guy; paint away with as broad a brush as you like. Douchebags just see a hat as part of a look.
Can we be done here, Mr. Holier Than Thou?
Hey, now, don’t be a playa hatah.
MODERATOR INTERVENETH: mswas, personal insults aren’t acceptable in this forum. Cool it. And, Wordman, please don’t lower yourself to responding in kind.
We can surely discuss a fashion/fad, and reactions to it, without name-calling and taunting?
Yeah, but, douchehats!
Sorry, I’ll be quiet now.
Sorry - you’re right.
Nope. They’re definitely porkpies. Homburgs look very similar to Fedoras, while there’s oddly comical about the proportions of a porkpie, much like a bowler.
Maybe that’s part of why I like them. I’m a comical guy.
I went to a meetup (local film-watching group), and I wore my second-favourte porkpie. Someone mentioned I was wearing ‘a little hat’. I got the impression she thought it was funny. An older gent showed up wearing a traditional fedora, so maybe she was just differentiating between the larger hat he wore and the smaller one I was wearing. But I prefer to think she was amused.
