There was a recent thread about the books, but now news is coming in for the first movie and I thought there should be a thread that doesn’t contain spoilers, for people who won’t read the books until after the movies. I’ve read the books, btw.
The Golden Compass is scheduled to start filming next month in the UK. It’s being written and directed by Chris Weitz (About A Boy) who is said to be very passionate about the books. It’s due to be released in November of next year.
Here’s the latest from ComingSoon (that link contains some minor spoilers).
I’m excited to have a movie at all, but Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman together? They both seem perfect for their roles.
Only Gwen Paltrow and Tilda Swinton can out-icy/creepy Nicole, and Craig can be hard and vulnerable at the same time.
Ian McShane as Iorek Byrnison? I was picturing someone more like James Earl Jones…
And Eva Green is lovely, but isn’t Serafina Pekkala supposed to be fair (blonde)?
Adam Godley’s a great choice for Pantalaimon, and Claire Higgins for Ma Costa is inspired. The lead, Dakota Blue Richards, is a complete unknown–no photos or her or anything.
Wouldn’t it be awesome if Samuel L. Jackson got the part of Lee Scorsby, like Pullman wanted? “I want these motherfcking cliffghasts off this motherfcking airship!”
I’m still coming off being disappointed by the hash that was the third book, so the movie adaptations give me hope. 2007 is going to rock.
I just don’t see how it’s going to happen. I’m afraid they’ll either defang it to appeal to the Harry Potter audience, or it will remain appropriately adult and find no audience at all because adults won’t go see a movie staring a weasel and a polar bear. The books (the later ones moreso) are just simply not kid’s books. I was rather aghast that they were placed in the kid’s section of book stores, and I’m no prude when it comes to pushing the envelope of what kids can handle. But the theology of this was just staggeringly horrifying, even as an adult - and I say that as someone who loved the books.
I don’t wanna see a namby-pamby-Potterized PG rated crapfest.
