'His Dark Materials' to be a BBC TV series

Thank you. I’m now wondering if I want to wait and binge the entire thing.

They come out in the US at two per week, so you would have only a six day wait.

Absolutely loving season 3. It’s very close to the book and we are loving this show.

I may re-watch the entire thing after season 3 is done.

Just finished season 3 last night.

I think season 3 did a pretty decent job of translating what I remember as being a rather turgid third book into something watchable (for example, the whole Mary with the mulefa part was dealt with mainly in a couple of minutes in the pre-title sequence rather than the interminable chapter after chapter in the book).

I think the final two episodes were a bit of a let down. Partly because the ending is anti-climactic by design but it also felt both rushed and overly drawn out at the same time. It maybe didn’t help that I didn’t feel much chemistry between Will and Lyra, despite liking both actors portrayals individually, which kind of dampens the heartache at the very end.

My wife and I loved the movie (and thought Kidman did a great job in her role) and we were sad to learn it didn’t get enough box office to warrant sequels. I’ve been interested since this thread came up but haven’t even watched the first episode. Since season three has ended, how far along in the trilogy has it come? I’d kind-of prefer not to start watching this unless and until I can binge the entirety – and THEN I’ll bother reading the books (which I bought after seeing this thread originate).

We waited, too, but this covers ALL OF IT, so feel free to watch away. It’s done!

Each season is one of the books, with some overlap.

Yes, they wisely included Will some in the first season. He just kind of shows up in the second book and I always thought incorporating him in the first book, at least a bit, would have been a good idea.

Thanks for the info, guys!
I’m adding that to my watch list now.

Since I recently got a smart TV and have access to a bunch of streaming channels, I was considering adding Anansi boys and American Gods (both are Gaiman works) but I was dismayed to learn they were both cancelled before conclusion. I joined Netflix particularly to binge on Sandman and while I’m enthused that Season 2 is in the works, I’m worried there won’t be a third or additional seasons. Well, I’ll just cross my fingers on that one. Is Good Omens the whole book, or did it get pre-cancelled?

It’s complete. But I think another season is coming.

Yes, Neil Gaiman is writing a sequel, but only as the TV show.

A fan asked him, “Hey, with no book, what are you going to do…make stuff up?”

Gaiman wrote back, “Yes, that is actually how we wrote the first book, you realize.”

So, what did people think of season 3, and the series as a whole? (full series spoilers coming)

I think season 2 was the best, by far. Seasons 1 and 3 both suffered from feeling like they were less than the sum of their parts. Like, the acting is good, the dialog is fine, the production design and scenery and effects are generally quite good, but the whole thing is just kind of a collection of stuff happening, for no obvious reason, just because.

Season 3 in particular… everything with Will and Lyra was just baffling. So, Lyra has some dreams about Roger, and decides that, right on the verge of a massive interdimensional war, she has to visit the land of the dead (which is a thing that exists, and everyone seems to agree so). Because of a dream. OK. So then she has to leave Pan behind. Which… shouldn’t that have killed Pan? But then Pan, and Will’s suddenly-existing daemon, both show up on a different plane. But while there, they are suddenly able to be indefinitely separated from their people. And sulk about it. Then they get reunited. But then suddenly Will and Lyra put them in another world, to keep them safe? What? That’s not how daemons work! And then later on the daemons are all sulky. Is that thing? And then, suddenly, Will and Lyra kissing is the MOST IMPORTANT LOVE IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSE or something. Oh, yeah, also daemons can’t live for very long outside their home plane. Did we not mention that before? And that somehow counts daemons who came into existence not on mundane earth even though mundane earth doesn’t HAVE daemons, yeah, they need to go back and live on mundane earth, where I guess Will will just have to hope no one ever notices how he talks to his non-aging cat.

Just a big muddled confusing mess. Maybe that stuff was all clear in the books (which I did read, but decades ago at this point). But boy heck it sure wasn’t clear in the show.

To pick on a few other points:
-Mrs. Coulter just became ridiculous. Both Asriel and the church know how devious and untrustworthy she is. Both want to believe she is there to help them. But both just randomly let her wander around unsupervised. You want to let her live and trust her to give good advice? Fine, let her live LOCKED UP IN A COMFORTABLE APARTMENT for fucks sake, and then maybe she won’t steal your one and only one magic space fighter. Oh, also, there’s one and only one magic space fighter.

-Also, there’s a single piece of Amber sitting in a stream that was somehow ground by the action of the pebbles into a perfect lens. And the third book in the trilogy was named after it! But… it basically never mattered at all.

-So the best general in all the universes has been locked up for months. But Asriel really needs him (even though he ends up doing no generalling ever), so breaks him out of prison with his fairy buddies. And the general is like “oh, hey, fairies exist, no big”. And they go back to the general’s headquarters, and… there’s barely a stir. “Hey, our leader has returned to us and been rescued! Let’s go about our business!”
