His Dark Materials - wow. [Spoilers]

You mean kind of like how the course of creation changed because some chick ate a fruit?

I’m in the target age group.

I loved the first book, it was brilliant. The universe was intriguing, the plot was great, and the ending led me to expect sequels of that book’s quality. I mean, a new world just opened in front of Lyra. I was fully expecting something incredible to happen after that revelation.

Words cannot describe the utter apathy I feel towards the second and third books. I’m sure many people enjoyed them, but I thought that the whole story went downhill from there. Perhaps I’m missing out on something, but I just can’t bring myself to read the sequels again.

I loved these books. I absolutely loved them. It took me a long time to “get” how exactly Mary was the serpent, but it did dawn on me eventually. But I do think the first book was my favourite. Not that I didn’t enjoy the other two, far from it, but the first one, set in a universe with such scale and beauty and subtle differences from our world, was the one that really took my breath away. But I didn’t really like Will; I didn’t find him nearly as interesting as Lyra.

Does anyone know anything about why the book was renamed in America?

Yeah, I feel much the same way, possibly because a few things about the ending of the third book hit much too close to home. I enjoyed them very much, but I would have a hard time bringing myself to read them again.

I’ve been thinking about this for a couple days, and I think I understand the temptation thing a little better, but I still don’t get what the point of it was. The dust is flowing into the abyss because of all the windows that were left open, so they close the windows and that solves the problem. What does Lyra and Will falling in love actually DO?

Helena, that relates to your OP in the thread that I used to direct you to this one.

What you described in the spoiler box was “the fall”, but instead of Knowledge being shameful and dangerous (as it did when Eve fell), the world became a place where it was prized and sought-after.

argh, I meant “becoming”, not “being”. :smack:
