Hit songs that totally disappeared

Milli Vanilli - Girl I’m Gonna Miss You
I will admit my younger self loved this song when it first came out, but of course this and their other hits went poof, never to be heard again.

So many to name but I will stick to one from my lifetime, 2001’s “Lady Marmalade”, the cover with Christina Aguilera, Pink, Maya, and Eve, soundtrack to Moulin Rouge.

It was played to death in Spring 2001 but I never hear it anymore. In terms of artists I don’t hear much of Sting any more, hits like “Fields of Gold”, “If I Ever Lose My Faith In you”, “Brand New Day”. I hear a few Police songs, but zilch of his solo stuff.

Elton John’s 90’s stuff is hard to hear now, except for the Lion King theme song.

Popcorn by Hot Butter.

Get Dancing by Disco Tex and the Sexoletts (My chiffon is wet darling, my chiffon is wet).

The Streak by Ray Stevens.

Man, the '70’s was full of fun.

Anything by Greenday.

“Mambo Italiano,” which was played to death in 2000. I hope I never hear the damned thing again!

You don’t seem to hear “Lambada” or “Maria” much these days, either.*

*I once had some Russian bimbo ask me what they were singing about in "Maria." I said "Uhhh ... Maria?" ** DUH!** :smack:

I heard “Longview” in the car yesterday. Surprised I don’t hear much post-Dookie (especially American Idiot), though.

Oh gosh, do I remember “Popcorn.” You couldn’t get away from it on the radio, and then, it just disappeared.

Along the same lines, I’ll offer “Joy” by Apollo 100.

Young Girl by Gary Puckett and The Union Gap is unlikely to get much airtime now since its lyrics are pretty disturbing.

Although on Googling apparently they sung a line from the song on Glee (though even for that one line they needed to switch the lyrics round).

To be fair, there was a pretty good reason that their hits went “poof” - it was revealed they weren’t singing them. Ditto New Kids On The Block.

Heard it the other day, although admittedly on kid’s TV. Man, it’s catchy.

New Kids on the Block didn’t sing on their recordings?

My boss and I were discussing how The Cars music somehow doesn’t sound “dated”, it still sounds fresh. But then I pointed out that their biggest hit single, Drive, never gets played.

One thing I’ve noticed is you never seem to hear the Kinks on classic rock stations. Other British bands of the era like the Beatles, the Stones, the Animals, and the Who are all staples. But even hits like “You Really Got Me”, “All Day and All of the Night”, “Tired of Waiting for You”, and “Lola” don’t seem to get played.

Allegedly.

According to Wikipedia, those allegations were recanted and the band performed live to prove they were the singers. So that amounts to a rather weak allegation. It seems to me there are probably a lot of other factors that affect their current popularity, such as the fact that the music wasn’t all that good and they looked ridiculous posing as tough guys from the hood.

Maybe in a way they’re still too hip for the room.

They had great success early on and those era songs don’t get played as much anyway, whoever did them. Then they were in the wilderness for a while, (and couldn’t tour the US) while the classic rock sound was getting made.

You want to wrap this up quick? Go to your LP collection and peruse your K-Tel, Ronco, et al platters. I’d wager 90% of those tracks were not only one-hit wonders, but are rarely heard from any more.

Like “Hocus Pocus,” by Focus.

Why do we never hear Mouth and Macneal doing “How do you do” anymore? Why Why Why. This is the eternal question.

I was going to say that the easier listening ones get forgotten more but Hocus Pocus was great! Should be revived.

Y’all must not watch a lot of VH1.

The local “oldies” station made the transition from 70s to 80s about three years ago, so a lot of these aren’t played like they used to… guess I need to find an “Older oldies” station.

My contribution: Charlie Dore’s Pilot of the Airways.

Maybe in your area. I probably hear that song more than anything else they’ve ever done.

Nowadays, VH-1 is mostly reality shows about black Z-list celebrities.
