The big loss from then is that the top 40 was integrated racially and it made for a much better selection musically. Those black records don’t play on classic rock formats now but they were maybe the best part of the playlist in the day.

It sounds like an upbeat, happy go lucky song, but in translation the lyrics are pretty depressing and are about the rootless anomie of living in postwar Japan.

Any time I’ve heard “Grazing in the Grass” in recent decades, it’s been the original instrumental version by Hugh Masekela. But the version I remember getting played in the '60s was the vocal version by the Friends of Distinction.
