My thing is that Hitchhiker stands even if you don’t know it’s a comedy (like I didn’t when I was younger), while Dirk Gently only makes sense as a comedy. So while the comedy might be better, the HGttG is a better series overall.
I’m surprised you didn’t put that the other way around; it seems like it’d be easier to read DGHDA completely straight and take it seriously.
Yeah. There’s really no way to read H2G2 other than as a comedy - which is fine.
Last Chance to See.
By far his best work, yet most folks don’t even know about it.
I wouldn’t say it’s his best, but it is pretty damn good.
I wouldn’t compare it to the others, however, since it’s not fiction.
Stephen Fry did a TV remake of it this year.
I decided not to finish it either, you know, if he couldn’t neither would I. It still sits bookmarked on my shelf.
I like to think of those two books as being part of a multi-author “Gods” trilogy - Terry Pratchett’s brilliant Small Gods being the third volume, of course. Three brilliant scifi/fantasy satirists who we have been lucky enough to have writing at the same time.
