I am trying to find the origin (which speech or book, etc.) and the original German of a quote attributed to Hitler:
“conscience is a Jewish invention like circumcision. My task is to free
men from the dirty and degrading ideas of conscience and morality.”
The document I am reading refers to “The Psychopathic God, Adolf Hitler” by Robert Waite, p. 16. The quote does occur there (google books), but no source is given.
Can anyone find where this quote is from, and if possible, a link to the German original?
If you don’t speak German: The first line you have combines two sentences - the one that starts with Das Gewissen(conscience) and the first part of the following sentence Es ist…. The second is a condensed version of the sentence that starts Ich befreie… [I set free].
seems to come from a book called “Hitler Speaks” by Hermann Rauschning. apparently there is a great deal of controversy over the accuracy of this book.
To clarify, “Conversations With Hitler” (aka Voice of Destruction) was written by Rauschning after he left the Nazi party and became an outspoken critic of Hitler for the Allied cause. It is mostly, probably entirely, invented in its details and any specific quote is very unlikely to be authentic. But he did in fact know Hitler, and it was an attempt to convey Hitler’s world view. Though as it comes from someone who was opposed to the man and show him in the worst light possible, it’s not something to be used as a reliable source.
