Ho, Ho, Hrmpf! (Dec mini rants)

I hate that font. The “modern calligraphy” wavy and loopy and would have failed 3rd grade cursive. It’s just aesthetically unpleasing. I don’t understand why it’s on everything.

My cousin’s daughter does this. Last Friday was this one:

Nice timing since it was the day before she hosted her mother’s big 70th birthday party. I was invited but ignored the invitation because I’m not stupid.

My 87 year old mother was living alone when the world ended. She has been very isolated for the whole time and during our daily calls, I could tell that she was losing mental acuity and that she needed human contact.

I was very worried and actually almost got into an online argument with a poster here that I used to really respect over my feeling that isolated elderly needed more than a phone call a day to get over the isolation. (I dropped the mic when this same person, who adamantly insisted that all the isolated elderly needed was daily phone calls, said that she understood the isolation and depression because it was so bad for her. So much so that now she was going to the office a few days a week/month which helped her. For some reason she thought this was proof that daily phone calls stopped the isolation and depression for the elderly.)

Anyhow, I found the cure for my mother and its not daily zoom meetings or phone calls. Its face to face interaction on a daily basis. Mom flew in (I know, I know) three weeks ago and the first week was really rough because she was so confused all the time.

Now we are having real conversations about real things, she is not repeating herself all the time and I can tell that she is recovering her mental health on a daily basis. I haven’t heard her say “I forgot how to do this” for days. Today, we were out and about in my car and I missed a turn. When she pointed this out, I was so happy that I almost cried.

If you were feeling evil, there are Bible quotes that Bible thumpers pretend aren’t there that you could use.

Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man intimately. But all the girls who have not known man intimately, spare for yourselves. Numbers 31:17-18

My oven seems to have died. The stove works, and the broiler works, but the lower baking element isn’t igniting. Crap.

That happened to us last month, with a 12 year old GE model. I had the same reaction. Crap.

Happily, hubs is handier than me, so looked it up on youtube and then ordered a replacement element online. He replaced the element with hand tools, total cost was less than 30 bucks.

(The hardest part was that he had to pull the stove out to look at the model number, which meant I saw how filthy the floor was, so he had to pull it all the way out so I could clean. Had I not looked, he could have gotten away with just pulling it out partway and shoving it back in real fast after he got the numbers he needed.)

So, hopefully your experience will be similar to mine and you won’t have to go into a store and spend a whole bunch of money.

We haven’t received any mail since last Tuesday. This has become more than a mini-rant.

Have you (attempted to) call the local Postmaster yet? Or marched down to the local P.O. and put on your most Karen-esque tantrum?

Sorry that either of those may be necessary for what should be a routine admin task.

Yeah, it does sound like you may have gotten whacked by someone else’s ‘vacation hold’. Are you in a location where you can see if your neighbors are getting mail (e.g., do you see the carrier’s truck driving around)?

WTF with the hot flashes. They went away years ago, now they are back with a vengeance!

This drives me batshit. No amount of Jesus will fix stupid.

Silver lining: bet you save a ton on heating bills in the winter.

When I moved less than ten years ago, I had to get a full-size dumpster – the kind that looks like the bed of a dump truck, with doors that open at the back – to get rid of my accumulated clutter. It eventually ended up looking more like a carefully packed moving van, with the boxes and large items neatly arranged, or else all the junk wouldn’t have fit! When the truck came to pick up the bin, it was so heavy that the engine was straining mightily to pull it up.

Today my basement and garage have more clutter than ever. My theory is that late at night, my various items of clutter get together and mate, and double their population roughly every six months. There is no other explanation.

Well there’s that…

Well, Ben Franklin said one fire is worth three moves. Just sayin’.

Whenever y’all get anything accomplished, come stealth-brag over here:

I’m here to Pit myself. I have a couple of Xmas packages to send out. I have been informed that this is the final day to get them shipped out, in order to arrive in time for The Big Day.

So why do I keep fiddling with the paint on the boxes, going out to look for “just one more thing” and playing endlessly with the filler? JUST MAIL THE FUCKING THINGS, me, and stop dicking around.

Hey, purplehorseshoe, stop dicking around. Mail those Xmas packages.

You’re welcome.

Thanks. I sent out the most important two.

Called my mother, to thank her for sending me a few minor things, and MY MOTHER HAS THE 'RONA VIRUS. She’s over 80, has a pacemaker … and the last time I called her, she (sheepishly) admitted she was at IKEA.

Got tested for it, when she went to the doctor because she FELL AND BROKE A RIB hauling her plants back into the garage before a freeze.
Jesus effing christ.

Sad part is, that woman’s gonna outlive us all.

I hope so.

What inside IKEA could possibly be an essential that you couldn’t wait to have shipped to ya? I mean I have my 70 year old moments but…at least for me it’s booze, chocolate, coffee or doughnuts that might lure me into a store. Well, that and forgetting to order their special kitty kibble in time.

Hope your mom bounces back fast from her fall and the ‘rona. Got my :crossed_fingers:t3:

Oh, this sucks. I’m sorry.

Gotta concur with Bippity - coffee is one of the few things, along with baked goods, that can get me out of my house.

I hope her ribs heal soon and her 'rona goes away quickly. It sounds like she was asymptomatic then?
