I’m really surprised that the poo tower wasn’t more compacted.
*Oh, my giddy aunt! *“I’m an artist,” says the mistress of The House at Poo Corner, and right away we see her sculpture.
And Madame L’Armoire? I wanted to beat her to death with her own nine-dollar wig.
In fairness, I think Hoarders may tend to focus more on hoarders who have been hit with an external deadline, such as the county or child services cracking down. They do provide aftercare, but there are often reasons why they have to move it along.
An episode of going back to people previously on the show would be very interesting. I am honestly quite pessimistic about the longterm results…
They’ve done that a couple times. Granted, they haven’t gone back to all of them, but they did go re-visit the most famous ones (or at least the most famous ones that let them come back.)
Almost all of them were doing well…even Lady Poop Bags.
Edit: They always provide aftercare funds and counseling/therapy, and most of the hoarders take them up on that. I don’t know how long the after-care is paid for, but it seems long enough for the hoarders to finally see what was wrong with them, and change their habits and/or decide to seek a therapist on their own.
There have been a few times where it was mentioned the hoarder refused aftercare funds/therapy…off the top of my head there was a woman living in a rental property her dad owned…she had lots of cats, was butting heads with people the whole time, and eventually said “fuck it” and stopped participating or letting anyone help her.
True. Good point.
Yes, the ones who accept the aftercare seem to maintain their cleaned-up homes almost always, and the ones who refuse either never get their homes cleared or immediately fill it back up.
The one follow-up episode I saw, this woman (Betty, on the left) had refused any aftercare and even during her original episode remarked that it (the cleanup) didn’t matter because she could just re-buy everything, or something to that effect. And of course when they went back for the follow-up episode, she had filled her house right back up.
I think some of the older hoarders have gotten relocated to assisted living situations, which helps hugely.
I can’t wait for the episode with the assisted living facility administrator who hoards hoarders.
Ah cool, thanks. I started watching a few episodes because of this thread (and to add to my extensive regime of procrastination), but hadn’t come across those yet.
I’ve looked up the follow-ups now, procrastination here I come…
I don’t think I’ve got the stomach to watch any of these shows, but I am disgustingly curious about the poo tower. How do you go if your toilet is towering upwards??
Carefully.
This is a nice change. The cat poop hoarder seems genuinely thrilled and grateful to get her home & life restored. I’m thinking she may actually keep the place clean.
Usually its like pulling teeth to get these people to allow the clean up. Then afterward they don’t exactly seem appreciative of all the work & money that went into the cleanup.
I haven’t seen this lady’s episode. Was she pretty cooperative throughout? What did they do with the cats? I’m surprised they didn’t have to rip out all the drywall to get the smell out. Usually the show only cleans up and any repairs have to be done later. It was great that they repainted for this lady.
I’m amazed her health wasn’t wrecked. Cat poop is pretty toxic stuff to be around.
They took the cats to a medical facility. This episode just aired, so I don’t know how long it’s been since they cleaned her place up.
Her toilet was overflowed with dried human poo…she had been pooing in it for a long time with no working plumbing.
You have to really love your job to shovel out 10 years of human poop. I can’t imagine even being part of the tv crew that went in there. I probably won’t watch this episode. Its a bit too disgusting for my stomach to handle. I am glad they helped her.
I was a little surprised the house survived structurally after being buried in feces.
Although I am not sure which is worse - mountains of cat shit, or those green cabinets.
I saw the ep - it appears that this woman has issues well beyond “just” being a hoarder. And I was looking for more than just one dead cat.
But it’s funny - I felt a lot more sorry for this woman than I usually do. Most often I just want to smack them a couple times screaming “You live in a cesspit, you dumb bastard - clean this crap up!!” Not this woman. She was not in denial; she just wasn’t capable of dealing with it.
I believe it said she made jewelry for a living. I wonder how that is going for her?
Regards,
Shodan
I just watched this episode online after hearing about it in the general Hoarders thread. She was indeed genuinely grateful and cried and cried with relief, happiness and gratitude as they showed her through the house — which was incredibly small. The psychologist’s diagnosis was that the woman felt herself unworthy and was punishing herself by allowing herself to live in squalor. She took her to a beauty shop and spiffed her up, showing her that she is indeed beautiful and worthy of having a clean, safe home. I don’t watch these shows but it was really remarkable to see how she had accepted help and began to believe in herself again.
Oh, also — it wasn’t 10 years of poo in the toilet, “just” about a year and a half. They had to take the whole fixture out completely to restore the room to normalcy.
I was so curious I sought out this episode and watched it online. She admitted that she only went in there in the dark so that she could “pretend” she wasn’t shitting on a mound of poo. There’s a discussion of poo-tower lady and her acceptance of help in this thread. Poor thing. She appeared really grateful for the help.
The other lady on that episode, though — bah! She only wanted to drag in her arm-wars from the storage shed back into the house, so she could fill them with her all her junky-junk. And she didn’t even care about her pretty new kitchen!
I have taken quite a fascination with these shows too. It’s a guilty pleasure. I don’t go out publicly proclaiming my taste for the show but I most definitely watch it every time it’s on or set a reminder if I see that the season premiere is next week or something. I’ve never seen a hoarder or met a hoarder in real life, but I have come across hoarding cars??? There’s been a couple cars i’ve seen that are just parked on the side of the road with piling heaps of trash and other miscellaneous items. How do people let themselves get to this point? Why is it so hard to dispose of trash?!?!!? :dubious:
Were they even nice armoires? (I turned on the show in the middle so I didn’t see them. Nor did I see the Tour of Shit. I don’t know whether I should be grateful or disappointed)
Most often it seems like certifiable mental illness. I mean, being sloppy and a bad housecleaner is one thing, but when you get to the point that the water in your house gets shut off and you continue to shit on top of the giant poop tower in your nonfunctional toilet, I think that’s a sign of (pardon the expression) more deep-seated problems.
