Holiday inflatables - yea or nay?

I love them on any holiday. The more the merrier!

One other thing- not an inflatable, but an animated statue of Santa, which I saw one year parked outside a house in a rather dark spot between street lights. When you walked past, the head swivelled to follow you…

I dislike them most of the time because they’re usually tacky and loud. However, I prefer them over blue LED lights.

If they’re creative and sparse, then I’m on board. If you don’t have much money or time to decorate, they can be a nice little nod toward some holiday cheer. I vote somewhat likeable.

Don’t care much either way.

I think people leave them deflated during the day because those blowers use a lot of power. My mom gave me one years ago and I tried it once but it kept blowing out the fuse. I imagine those people with five of them in their yard are seeing some spiked electric bills.

My neighbors used to have a reindeer that, by whatever quirk of physics, always inflated from the rear first with its hindquarters upright and front half sort of crouched. So, while it was inflating, it looked as though the deer was either mooning you or was anxious to breed.

Yep, my thoughts exactly. I think they’re pretty tacky, but hey, you do you.

There’s a house in our neighborhood where the yard is just FULL of inflatables. The whole front lawn is covered. However, I know their young son (about 6, I think) has Downs Syndrome so I like to imagine him walking through the yard completely delighted by them. I cut that family some slack.

Plus a lot of people use timers on their outdoor lights so they don’t have to go around flipping switches and plugging stuff in every night.

I think they’re tacky, but people can put whatever they want on their own property.

So your tastes would not run towards the inflatable ATAT bearing down on the light up 2 Yodas, Stormtroopers, Darth, C3Po, R2D2, PLUS the inflatable helicopter with Santa and Rudolph on the roof, the toy soldiers, the snowman, the north pole/light pole/signpost, various lights of every color on house and bushes, ornaments and bells on the bushes, lit and decorated x-mas tree on the lawn, lit up “LOVE” in the front window - I’m sure I’m forgetting something.

I guess I am just surprised when I see proof that other people perceive things so differently than I. I would imagine picking ANY 1 (or even 2 or 3) themes, and sticking with those. But the apparent approach of “Let’s just toss all manner of crap on the lawn,” is so foreign to me. These folk spent considerable time and money getting the stone on various parts of their landscaping to match, so it isn’t as tho they are blind to details.

There is another house a couple of blocks away with a blow up santa Mickey, and lights along the eaves. Looks damned tasteful and subdued in comparison!

To repeat, while I think it tacky, I really wouldn’t care if it were quiet.

“I’m going to vote no, never, they are extremely tacky and … OMG AN IMPERIAL WALKER SIGN ME UP!!!”

So I’ll be adjusting my vote to “No. Unless it’s an imperial walker.”

Well, in reality, there will never be an inflatable on my lawn, but hey, other people can do what they want.

One of my sisters just *LURVES *decorating for any occasion and she always goes overboard. She took most of the decorations that graced our childhood home when Mom was decluttering. Plus when she got married, her husband brought some stuff with him. And she got some of my unused decorations. Not to mention the stuff she buys.

My husband and I refer to such displays as elf vomit. Because we’re classy like that.

Yah, does seem to be a bit of overkill. However, I always hope there’s some reason I haven’t considered that might help things be more palatable to me. But if the damned things were driving me to distraction with all their infernal noise, I’d be right on board with you.

A Star Wars theme is cool though. I wouldn’t mind an Imperial Walker for myself.

Somewhat related, I was contemplating the other day, as I gazed upon my neighbor’s lawn featuring Santa, Rudolph, and BB8, how funny it is that Star Wars is now solidly part of the American secular holiday motif. There are A LOT of Star Wars holiday decorations, in a way that would have seemed nonsensical back in the era of the original trilogy. Maybe it is all the nostalgia from people my age, remembering the thrill of getting new Star Wars toys under the tree?

Like any self-expression, it’s a balance between being true to yourself and respecting those around you. This is otherwise known as tact or taste. Sometimes in life I think it’s great to give a nice big middle-finger to tact and taste, but decorating your front lawn isn’t one of those times.

Giant inflatables are the least amount of effort to have the biggest impact on those around you (as far as holiday decorating goes). They draw a lot of attention to themselves without having a bit of personality, originality, or creativity.

I hates them. But I guess they make some people happy. So it’s all good, I guess.

I have always loved my neighbors’ outdoor Christmas decorations. I walk my little 60-house neighborhood every night with my dogs, and I just love seeing them from the smallest wreath to the biggest monstrosity (one house has been adding one new light feature every year for over a decade and it’s a big, beautiful mess)

A few years ago I started putting up lights and it’s hard. And it’s expensive. I do not enjoy it but I do love the result so I do it every year now.

So when I see any outdoor display - even those crazy inflatables - I appreciate the sentiment. There is literally no other reason for those things, or any other Christmas lights, than to bring a little joy and light to the dark night, for everyone to enjoy. So I dig it.

In certain situations, inflatables are perfectly fine. There’s a house in my 'hood that puts up an inflatable Detroit Lions football player whenever the team has a game and I think that’s kinda cool…

…but not as cool as an inflatable tail-wagging Christmas stegosaurus!

To all the people who posted that they don’t care what other people do on their own property: I don’t believe you. Everyone has limits.

Not me.

We have two neighbors, but have no direct view of their properties.

For all those expressing squee over the AT AT, please let me assure you, in reality it is hideous even when compared to other inflatables or other SW holiday decorations.

It is 2 shades of grey - four columnar legs, with a lighter colored box-like body on top. The only color is a string of 5-6 colored lightbulbs running down one side. Believe me, this drab monstrosity makes you yearn for ANY other inflatable - Homer, Mickey, Santa, Frosty - ANYTHING.

The neighbors’ other SW figures are kinds cute (tho I don’t get the sense of scale. For example, Darth is significantly smaller than Yoda.) ISTR that a few years ago, when it was just the first couple of SW figures and some lights, it looked cute and funky. But (to my mind) if you are going SW theme, maybe hold off on the toy soldiers, etc…

Same kind of way I often wonder when you see a house with every type of light imaginable: different colored icicles; some solid white, red, or green, others multicolored; some flashing/chasing… Just makes me wonder what those people see when they look at something like that.

I voted I don’t care, but I agree with you on this. Personally, I think inflatables are downright tacky & ugly and show a lack of creativity. BUT, while I basically feel people can do what they want on their own property, live and let live, and all that jazz…if you live in a subdivision, or a neighborhood with small yards, you really should consider your neighbors and not junk up the place with your over-the-top display.

Thankfully, the season is rather short, and they’ll get shoved back in the garage in a month until next year.

I hate them, they’re usually just lazy attempts at decorating.

I also hate the “lazer lights” that project millions of dots on your house. No one thinks “Ooooh! That guy put up 4 million lights on his house!”, we think “Wow, that guy plugged in a light bulb. how lazy can you get?”
