Holiday storm 2022

Some I just want to say, as a public service announcement

Gas or propane heat is good, but It won’t run long, as a safety feature , without a fan moving the air, which is, in all but the most unusual circumstances, without electricity., wont happen. And that fan takes a relatively big kick to startup.

Only 1-3" predicted here in central Ohio. Woo hoo.

We won’t get snow here, but it’s going to be unusually cold. We’ll probably put a light bulb under the fake rock where the water pump resides to make sure it doesn’t freeze. We have duel fuel heating and the propane will come on when it’s less than 40F, and it looks like it’ll be under that temp for about 3 days solid. Cha-ching.

The issue isn’t what it’s like elsewhere; it’s always what it’s like for people experiencing the weather. I can easily understand that the temps you mention count as bone-chilling for Alabama, and that the roads may not be safe because of precipitation at unusually low temperatures for Alabama drivers.

Be careful and safe!

Not worried. Canadians are used to bad weather, well prepared for it, and I am unaffected by scary talk of freezing temperatures, a “flash freeze” where the temperature drops quickly, blustery snow, etc. it could be happening at a more opportune time, but there is no real reason to have kittens. It isn’t uncommon for things not to be as bad as advertised.

No, that was Texas Senator Cruz who went to Cancun, Mexico:

Midnight in SW Michigan and it’s now 10 degrees, but my puppy loves it.

Sounds like I made a smart decision to vacation in Singapore this week.

Seems to have bypassed us, shifting from a prediction of hours of freezing rain with up to 1/2 inch of ice accumulation to zero actual ice.

Ok, I’ll be the asshole. Near San Francisco, temperature is predicted to drop all the way down to 47 tonight, and about the same tomorrow. No precipitation.

I’m supposed to be at work at 5 am this morning. Looking out the window, light snow accumulation. I anticipate just driving out in the pickup with no need to shovel.

Have the heavy winter gear laid out.

I hope the weather keeps at least some of the customers home (and not just some of the staff). It will give us a chance to catch up from yesterday.

And left his dog home alone.

Here they warn temperature going from 36F to 14F overnight, 8” of snow, winds to 70mph (so temperature -13F with wind chill). No sign of snow or wind so far. It isn’t colder yet, they say it will be by noon.

My little corner of paradise is to be spared snow, but temps will be in the teens later today, 20s tomorrow, and not get above freezing on Christmas. A week later, we’re promised 60s.

Weird.

I’ve been scrolling the Mi DOT interactive maps looking at the streaming feeds from highway cams all over the state. And the snowplows have onboard cams too. But what is making me smile is that the plows all have nicknames and that is giving me joy! H here’s a few nearby

Glad to see those guys on the roads.

Wind is up, straight out of the west, might have 10” out there.

NC here. Rain ended last night, Windy and getting colder. Below freezing now.

Looking at the map, We are the leader in power outages. Way to go NC.

What a fantastic map, @SoToasty! Ooooo, I loves me some data.

Your name is very apt. It describes me right now. My central heat is keeping up-- yay! In the past it hasn’t done so well.

It’s 18 here in San Antonio, bright sunshine, no wind. I just went out and poured boiling water on the iced-over bird/wildlife water bowls in the yard. (Wildlife to include skunks, possums, raccoons, and a gray fox, which my porch camera recorded at 6:40 am trying to drink from the frozen water pan-- and going off in what appeared to be a huff when he didn’t succeed.)

Here is the NJ outage tracker.

I needed that far too often in my last home.

Here in Cleveland, we barely moistened the roads before it froze-- I think any ice will be negligible compared to the road texture. And we only got a light dusting of snow. But we’ve got some very impressive winds-- Sustained speeds of over 30 MPH, and gusts almost twice that.

There are lots of reasons to have kittens!

(yes, I know that’s not what you meant --)

Ah. That is indeed who I was thinking of.

@chela, those snowplow names are great.

Around 10:30 this morning light rain with little wind changed abruptly to light snow with lots of wind. It seems to have skipped the icing stage entirely, which should help a great deal, although of course wet surfaces will freeze; but I expect the sand trucks are out, I think that’s probably what turned around here while I was in the john.

Rain was heavier at times last night and there was about eight tenths of an inch in the gauge when I went out and emptied it before it could freeze. If that had all arrived as snow we’d probably wind up with about a foot; but as it is they’re only expecting an inch or two of snow. High wind and wind chill advisories are still out, though; and I’'m still staying home. But then I was going to anyway.
