I’ve never been outside of my house after Christmas, and I always hear the term, “holiday traffic” all over the radio. Now, I’m planning to get from Staten Island to Newark on December 26th. How much of a problem will I have in doing that?
Well, the term “holiday traffic” is used to describe a whole lot of things…but most commonly air travel.
The days surrounding Thanksgiving are traditionally the busiest travel days of the year (in the US). The Wed before and Sunday after Thanksgiving usually have more people flying than any other days. A lot of people drive as well, so the combination makes for more people travelling than on any other days.
As for Christmas, the Sunday after is usually the busy day. Since this year the 26th is a Friday, it would depend on how many people get that Friday off. If everyone has to work, expect a madhouse. If people are off, they will stay home until Sunday.
So…
What say you dopers? How many people have the Friday after Christmas off?
(I won’t know my schedule until the 21st of Nov, and I’ll most likely be working the whole weekend).
I go to Staten Island almost every Christmas and return to New Jersey either late that night or the next morning, and have never had a problem. On Christmas night however I usually notice quite a traffic jam on the Outer Bridge going the other way, INTO Staten Island from Jersey. I’ve been doing this for years at all hours and I’ve never had a problem, except in cases where there was an accident or something out of the ordinary to tie up the traffic.
