p-22 has been located, tranquilized, and taken to have a health assessment after attacking a chihuahua. it is believed he had a car accident, that hampered his hunting.
p-22 is famous for being photographed by the hollywood sign and living in griffith park.
he is about 11-12 years old. i’m hoping he can have a nice retirement at a big cat refuge.
Those are some dark twisty roads up in those hills. Even cats’ famously good night vision gets crappy when they’re elderly. He had probably been drinking, took a curve too fast, & hit something.
Chihuahuas are high in vigor but low in quality. A proper diet for a mountain lion includes a wide variety of purse dogs, pet lizards, fancy cats, and the occasional trust fund heiress who got lost in the Hollywood Hills after staggering out of a late night party and rolled down the slope.
At his age he should have a young cub to drive him around while he luxuriates in the back seat of his stretch limo, snorting lines of coke off of the belly of a sexy little ocelot on his way to the Chataeu Marmont for a “important production meeting” with Marty and Leo on his upcoming biopic, King of the Celluloid Jungle.
awwww weve spent years watching him off and on …usually when he decided to stop traffic by going across a 4 lane freeway during rush hour … one time he sat in the middle of one and cleaned his bits for 20 minutes and then realized he was on an errand and trotted off like he was a house cat
The accident did quite a bit of damage. Poor dude. He had significant trauma to his head, eye, and internal organs. The trauma to his internal organs would have required invasive surgical repair.
He was found to have irreversible kidney disease as well as other pre existing conditions.
I’m sure they did all they could for him, and letting him go with dignity was the best decision.
He will live on in the wildlife crossing he inspired.
a memorial is being planned for p-22, after christmas. His body will be given to the county’s Natural History Museum, where it will be received by Ordeñana, the biologist who discovered him. there is talk of a statue of him for griffith park, and possibly a star on hollywood blvd.
There’s some momentum gathering to put up a bronze statue at the Observatory. There’s also been talk of taxidermy-ing him and putting him on display. I prefer the former and hope the latter does not come to pass.
Here’s my favorite of the many good photos taken over the years.
oooh, that is wonderful. he looks so good and healthy there.
i would not like the taxidermy idea. perhaps they could compost him and use the soil to plant a memorial tree. compost is used for livestock and in some states humans.
