The first thing that flashed through my mind was some sort of Sum of All Fears conspiracy. I think the Communists are trying to frame the U.S. in ‘Ecological Warfare’!!

In Soviet Russia, ecology wages wa-
Nah.
Of course it was the Americans. They wanted to steal water from the Lake of the Woods, but the Canadians made such a fuss that the water was stolen from Russia instead. Note how the Lake of the Woods diversion option has mysteriously been disappeared from North Dakota’s list (and remember that Tripler has had close ties with the military in North Dakota, so don’t be fooled by him): http://www.rrvwsp.com/maps.htm
I disavow any knowledge of any type by this statement. This post will self desctruct in five seconds. . .

. . . eight, nine, ten. . . aw shit.
I trust I’m being whooshed here.
And is there really any shock at such a ludicrous assertion that America is somehow doing such things? Based on what I’ve seen on these boards, that Russian woman quoted sounds pretty damn reasonable.
One thing that does make me fell a little better about killing off that village (I assume that’s the next avenue of thought the ill-informed America heaters will travel) is that so many are still aware that we can pretty much bitch-slap anyone we want. We usually don’t, but when a group wants to keep pushing buttons, there’s a chance the phone will ring. We always answer. Deal with it.
Hey Duffer, yes, it was a whoosh as far as the Ruskies goes.
If you are interested, yes, North Dakota is making plans to deal with it’s expected water shortage, and one option that is being considered is to pipe water out of the Lake of the Woods, which is bounded by Ontario and Minnesota. Unfortuantely, no one thought to mention the plan to Canada and see what Canada might think about having water diverted out of the lake, so there was a bit of a fluster when North Dakota said that Canada had not raised an objection.
“Using a hydrology model, Reclamation projects that the [Red River] valley will face a critical water shortage during future droughts.”
http://www.rrvwsp.com/fall_2004_eis_newsletter.pdf at page 2.
Signe Snortland, an environmental specialist with the North Dakota water agency, anticipates a “1930s-type drought” causing “a water shortage equal to 90 per cent of its needs . . . within 25 years.”

One option proposed by the Bureau of Reclamation is to divert water from the Lake of the Woods, as per the map on page 4 ibid.
http://www.rrvwsp.com/fall_2004_eis_newsletter.pdf
It appears that no Canadian agency was consulted, as implied by pages 5 and 7 ibid. Snortland “said Monday there had been no objection to the plan from Canada.”
http://www.waterconserve.info/articles/reader.asp?linkid=40947
Upon learning of the proposed option, Ontario voiced strong opposition on Wednesday.

Wait a minnit, wait a minnit, wait a minnit . . . .
Even if I did have something to do with the theft of Russian waters, just how the hell would I transport it to the U.S. without losing it’s potential as fresh water? (i.e. not spilling it into a sea/ocean, or not having someone find me with umpteen-hundred barges of fresh Russian fluid)?

I again profess my innocence.
Regurgitation like a mama-bird returning to her young.
Ahhhh, they’re 1930’s style “droughts”.
Muffin, I must say I’ve never heard of these groups, nor any shortage of water of any kind unless the oldsters are talking about the Dust Bowl years. And I sure as hell never heard of any diversion bringing water from LotW south when the Red flows north and brings us all the water we need.
And it tends to give us plenty of water
thats how they did it! they evaporated the water using America Heaters!!
with an attitude like that, are you suprised so much of the world reacts negatively to Americans?
Hey Duffer, those links are real. Ne shitteth vous pas. There really is a US Bureau of Land Reclamation that really is expecting and planning for a massive dust bowl era type drought, and one of the proposals they are considering really is to pipe water down from the Lake of the Woods to North Dakota, and there really is an Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources which really is opposed to any such diversion, and no, the North Dakota planners really did not bother to mention it to the Canadians.
Muffin, I’m not trying to start an argument, I was just saying I’ve never heard of any of this. Sorry if it seemed otherwise. I’m going to check this out a little deeper and find out what this is all about. Might explain why Canada is so against the Devil’s Lake outlet.
No prob.
The Devil’s Lake issue is a different issue (Manitoba is concerned about receiving water quality and parasites), but the two issues (Devil’s Lake drainage and Lake of the Woods diversion) both tend to piss off the Canadians.
