Tell me about it. If I was the OP I would fire her today. I wouldn’t keep her on if she was stealing my hundred dollar whiskey.
Day-um …
Nanny really needs to be confronted. And if she came recommended from a service, they need to know too.
You need to lock up your scotch. If you object, I can take it off your hands to solve the problem.
- Lock up scotch or move to your work location in the house so she can’t get to it without your knowing.
- Start interviewing other nannies.
- Confrontation time. If you don’t wish to confront her without real evidence, set up some cameras to watch your supply, catch her, and show her the evidence.
Ok, since people apparently can’t be bothered to refer to the OP, once again:
Emphasis mine.
This one is easy. Just fire her already.
I know a lot of people probably think you should give her another chance, but you really should just let her go.
No idea why you would keep her around after what she did.
Kind of surprised I’m the first one to suggest it in fact.
Get back under your bridge!
Well that doesn’t come off sounding all that neighborly.
Good thing you’re not my nanny, or I’d have to fire you for that kind of talk.
You use “gin” to describe Bombay Sapphire? Gin is Gibleys, or Beefeater, or Tanqueray. How can you lump Bombay Sapphire in with that lot? Bombay Sapphire is what gin wishes to be. Some bourgeoisie you are.
I’m curious, when you did let her go what was her reaction? I assume you told her why? Did she cop to it, deny it, what? You’re leaving out a key piece of the story.
I bought a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue today.
Which has nothing to do with the nanny. I just thought this would be an appropriate place to brag about it.
According to some definitions, it can mean nouveau riche. In which case, Bombay Sapphire is a perfectly fine “fancy” gin, to impress the slightly less rich who can’t buy fancy cars like a BMW 3 series that you need to finance. This is opposed to where they were previously, when Gordon’s was a big expense.
Hendrick’s is for your only child’s wedding. Screw that, they can do that multiple times. Their funeral.
Well, if you’ve been a good boy, and you’ve complained about it to the right people (wink, wink) then maybe Santa will bring you a replacement stash of airplane-bottle Scotch.
Mmm, airplane-bottle Scotch…
My kid just came home for Christmas, and found my stash. Thinks I’m weird for not just buying the big bottles. But I gotta try 'em ALL! (and not only am I not bourgeois, I’m downright cheap)
And it took your nanny stealing some for you to cotton on that you were bourgeois?
Johnnie Walker Blue? Bah, that’s what I pour in my dogs water bowl. I keep the good scotch for me and the kids…and the cat (he’s got discriminating taste).
Pfft. You think a blended malt is worth bragging about? Silly nouveau riche.

I actually do like my Jonnie Walker Blue, but I miss the Green the most. I can’t believe they discontinued it! A fine deal for a vatted malt, around $65. Looking online, it appears it still isn’t completely sold out. Better stock up!
They had green at the liquor store. Who knew it was so special? I don’t even like scotch.
The blue was a for a gift. My bottle of black hung around my liquor cabinet for 15 years until I finally had a reason to crack it. Now it’s rattling around in the trunk of my car. Does that make me bourgeois?
Also something I missed in the OP but just noticed in this quoted section - the OP is apparently American but spells “flavor” with a “u”? Now that is just fucking pretentious.
Well, y’all can kiss my arse, kick me to the kerb and colour me unimpressed with that meagre assumption, bubba.
Erg. To clarify, she’s our ‘former’ nanny. The reasons are unrelated to the OP, happened back in May, and would make for a tedious and boring read (not too different from most of my posts). The tl;dr bit is that she’s no longer full time, we made it through the summer on our own thanks to day camp, the Little Man began school in September, we have a different babysitter here for the school>office close, and the now-former nanny became our go-to for the occasional overnight/weekend.
We just found out about the missing nipper bottles because a few years ago we slowed down air travel in favour of driving to summer music festivals. This is a special concert series we’re heading too for our anniversary, hence the flight.
In all honesty, I really didn’t care if she had a drink or two in overnights. The shenanigans kind of change all that, but really, a glass of wine after the Little Man went down is really No Big Deal. She’s a fifty-something woman, a glass of wine or whatever isn’t necessarily putting the Little Man at risk.
Anyway, it’s all Scotch under the bridge now, so there’s no need or desire to confront her. We just won’t call her in for help.
And what, Bombay is shitty gin? Damn, but I do like it for martinis. Oh well, scratch one bourgeois point.
The spelling thing is bourgeois-neutral. Most of my clients have me write in British English, so all my systems are set to it and a lot of things (colour, favour, etc.) are second nature. Not everything though—I have no idea if it’s airplane or aeroplane and would have to look it up.
Don’t turn your nose up at blends because they’re blends. Sure, there are lots of shitty ones out there, the majority even, but some bottlers take their time to craft some very good elixirs (I have no idea if that’s bourgeois or not—as far as the Little Man is concerned, mommy drinks Jesus water and daddy drinks elixir). I mentioned Compass Box in the OP. They’re Asyla is a great ‘starter’ Scotch, something very light and approachable. Their Hedonism is my favourite of their line with Oak Cross a close second. I’m not terribly huge on peaty Scotches (they’re okay, but I don’t find it necessary to enjoy), but friends who do find Peat Monster very enjoyable.
The bar itself shouldn’t add any bourgeois points (nor should the monocle–I just hate carrying reading glasses and I need to be able to see when I’m out of the house). At a glass or two every few nights or so, a single bottle would last for a few weeks. Instead of buying a replacement every time, I pick up a few here and there before running out so now that there’s lots of variety. I’m not pushy with it (not worth insisting that someone who says they don’t like Scotch try it), but if any guest shows interest it’s there to share and help them explore. And, since some friends and relatives like Scotch, it’s great to have what they want on hand (oh, you prefer something peaty…?).
