Ok, I was on vacation and took my cell phone with me. I get to the lovely house on the beach, check out my phone, lo and behold, it says HOME right there on my screen. Contrary to the ROAM that it normally displays when I’m roaming. Foolishly I took the HOME display to indicate that I was within my HOME calling area, I felt free to use my phone.
Big Mistake.
I now have a bill from AT&T for well over $100 of roaming calls. The helpful AT&T rep informed me that the area display on my phone is NOT an indicator of what area I’m in. I am supposed to memorize the exact boundaries of my calling plan so that if it says HOME in a roaming area, I’ll know I’m roaming
Luckily, I changed my plan fairly recently, so cancelling will cost me $170.
Is this legal? Sending faulty area information to peoples phones, then charging them roaming fees?
Dude, got the ‘UnPlan’ do you? Totally a piece of shit deal. At least on the SunCom network (the SC, NC, GA, VA, TN, FL) branch of the AT&T Cellular net, it’ll tell you if you’re outside your ‘home’ (‘free’ for us) area by using the ‘Partner’ (EG, SunCom, not in Sumter) flash on your phone. If you ever question where you are, turn your phone off, leave it off for 5 mins, and then turn it back on. When it re-establishes contact with the net, it’ll tell you if you’re free, roaming, or what.
I had that exact same thing happen to me! And I was just as irritated! It didn’t cost quite as much, but still! Grr! You’ve brought back all sorts of repressed pain.
I upgraded my plan to no-roaming after that. Good decision on my part.
Holy shit. I know how you feel. I moved to Oklahoma City for college last week. My local area makes a graceful arc entirely AROUND OKC, from southern Missouri to the northern tip of Texas. It will cost in excess of #300 to cancel the contract. So, for now, I’m just roaming. They won’t even change me to the five-state plan, because, apparently, I would hve to use half of my minutes in the local area, where I’ll never be. ARGH.
