So I’m thinking about having the house remodeled a bit, but I have no clue where to even begin. I have a few ideas on what could be done, but I have no idea which ones are feasible and would provide the biggest benefit for the buck. Basically, I’m looking to either expand all the bedrooms (they all share a common outside wall) or to add a second story or to add another room entirely.
Do I start with an architect or a general contractor to come out and tell me what I can/cannot possibly do? How much of an idea do I need to have of what I’d like to have done before I call these people? In other words, do I need to know if I want to add a second floor, or can I just tell them that I’m looking to add more room to the house and then get ideas from them?
I bought one of those “home design” software packages to see what things would look like with different designs, but so far I’m not impressed with how things are represented.
Any and all input is greatly appreciated.
I’m just starting an addition project for my house. It’s going to be a mechanical utility room so lots of plumbing and electrical is involved.
I did my own plans, but I have pretty much experience with the building trades. I’ve also been involved with drafting and mapping all my life.
Hmmm, I think that the first thing that you need to know is what you want to accomplish. The different scenarios cost per square foot could vary widely. You may want to call some contractors, explain your situation and see if they can give you an estimated cost per square foot for an expansion, addition, or addition of second story. This may help you decide what the best bang for the buck will be. Remember this will be an estimate.
You may want to also ask an architect if they will come consult with you for a few hours. I think a contractor is going to want someone that already has a clear idea (YMMV). It’s amazing how fast things can change. An expert will be able to see potential difficulties with different approaches before you set your mind to something only to find out it’s nearly impossible.
Let your fingers do the walking. Most of these guys will see it as a foot in the door to do the actual work.
My suggestion would be to go down to Home Depot or any similar do-it-yourself home center and ask someone. They have classes for just those things you are talking about and if they don’t, they will know who to contact.
uh, this sounds like a bit more than ‘ask Home Depot’ - start with what you want to accomplish - then the matter of ‘up vs out’ can be addressed.
And hint- anytime you want the change the ‘footprint’ of a house in an incorporated area, get to know the building inspector.
I’d recommend an architect as first contact, based on what you’ve said.
Good Luck
