President Bush quietly signed Executive Order 13268 today.

“Executive Order 13268–Termination of Emergency With Respect to the Taliban and Amendment of Executive Order 13224 of September 23, 2001”

– Federal Register: July 3, 2002 (Volume 67, Number 128)

As of today, the threat of terrorism against the USA by the Taliban no longer exists, at least officially.

So how long will it be before …

  1. The media reports this, if ever?
  2. Debate ensues about this Administation’s continuing efforts to curtail constitutional rights when part of the basis for their acts no longer legally exists?

I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Since it specifically references “Taliban” and not “Al Queda”, this might only be pertinent to operations in Afghanistan.
