Here’s another site with examples of what not to put on your site: Web Pages That Suck
I think this one commits just about every Homepage Don’t:

Thanks to Kat, TechChick, MattK, and Shayna for the links. I had bunches of fun sifting through the Losers dot org pages…good got better when I stumbled upon HeatherLee’s homepage. Course, I’m sure that nobody here had anything to do with that.
No worries. Mine is going to be fairly simplistic, and I’m not even entertaining the notion of sounds or animation. I’m not going to have the same background throughout the whole thing, but I am going to be using colors from a pallette that I’ve already set up. So, while it may not be the epitome of continuity, it’s not going to be an annoying array of unrelated backgrounds. Worry not, it’s all solids.
Techchick: regarding your feeling that personal homepages are a waste of time…that’s the point, silly! If I weren’t so busy doing things like making webpages and hanging out on the SDMB and #straightdope, I might actually have to be productive and do things like housework and errands. I am always seeking out new ways to procrastinate, and this seems to be kinda up my alley. Difference between me and some other novices is that I actually give a shit about the end product.
“…being normal is not necessarily a virtue. It rather denotes a lack of courage.”
Chris:
Glad to hear that someone who’s making a personal page does Some don’t have a clue and make theirs look like a monkey has created it
Make the personal web page however you want. It’s supposed to be part of your personality. Want to add animated gifs? Do it! Weird colors? Bonus! Don’t bother with content if you’re not going to keep it up. You’ll be best served by putting up information that will be of interest to friends and family and foregoing the useful content. If you must, then collections of related links can be useful. If you’re an expert on something, or have something you just really want to say, then go for it, but having a site that never gets updated can be kinda depressing. (See the “reviews” bit of my home page as an example. Oh, the lofty plans I had for that…)
