Most homepages have the normal hobbies, kids, pets, stuff like that. I see you have your car, that’s a start. To make your own buttons and stuff get Paint Shop Pro.
It depends on what message you want to give to the world.
I have an active Advanced Dungeons & Dragons campaign, so I dedicate pages to background information that the players would have living in Sigil. I link to both pages i have written and pages authored by others which go into more detail.
I write Quake 2 levels, and post some of them for others to try.
I am running a fantasy football league, and the participants check in on my webpages to get scores, standings, and trade information.
My wife and I run the reunion committee for her family, and we post info about the reunions.
Etc…
So, for a specific bit of wisdom, make your front page an index of sorts, a portal taking people to your different places of interest. Like the listings of forums on the main page of this message board. Be creative with the background, the colors, the buttons… remember things like don’t make your font color clash with or be overshadowed by your background, make sure your links work, and be sure your page doesn’t take forever to load (avoid big JPEGs.)
I highly recommend that you find a good HTML tutorial to learn how to add features to your pages.
I also suggest you peruse a few homepages of SDMB posters by clicking the little red house icon at the bottom of a post. Look at elements you like, and see how they’re done. Don’t copy text or pics without permission, however.
Take a look at my website (the little red house below). I took the original site from http://www.pvponline.com and then added elements that I liked and removed those I didn’t.
Thanks for your help guys, and ** robgruver**, I’m really impressed at the design of your website. I’ll start taking notes about other sites, just as soon as I decide what to write about.
I think it’s a good start for a home page. Gotta start somehow, somewhere. Kudos for trying! A year from now, your site will be spectacular! Maybe you could create categories of interests or activities or hobbies. Many people have a section of fave links. I like the links above. Here are some more:
