I would say it’s not stupidity but is instead unpopularity. My impression is that little people are always tempted to beat up on the unpopular in an attempt to prove their own standing.

Are you seriously skeptical that Honesty made such an argument? If so, I will try to dig it up.
If there is somebody who is not on my shit list who asks for backup, I generally try to provide it – provided they tell me they are seriously skeptical of the claim I made. (Some people ask for backup simply as a rhetorical device and not because they really question the claim at issue)
