So my little sister is getting married next April 3rd and I just got off the phone with my mom talking about it. They are having a very small wedding (I’m going to give her away! WOO:D) and a small casual reception in the party room of a bar in town.
They want to to go to Ireland for their honeymoon and I promised my mom I would help find places for them to go. My wish is to be able to help pay for some of the lodgings there and to hook them up with cool places. Since I haven’t been back in more than twenty years, my knowledge is sadly lacking.
So Irish Dopers, any suggestions or recommendations? What about your cousin/grandma/parent who has a B&B that they want to rent to a deserving young couple for a reasonable sum? I’m thinking a week is how long they want to stay.
Hopefully those sites will help you out, cant really offer any more on the accommodation, sorry…but it might be wise to let people know what part of the country you are looking at
Check out Rick Steves Ireland 2003 book or others for driving around for a week & for making a plan in general.
I stayed at College Crest Guest House in Galway. Walking distance to city center. Even if you have a car, it’s better to walk around there. They have a web site. Also, the nearby tourist office has tickets for tours of the Aran Islands, or at least taking a bus to the ferry to the islands.
The Dingle Peninsula is wonderful, and there are B & B’s facing the bay. I stayed at a very charming one run by Marianne Begley last year. I don’t have the name of the place, but she has a web site for her irish wildflowers at http://www.dinglewildflowers.com/about.html
They can pick up a car rental at Shannon Airport (if they fly into that one).
Sounds like a wonderful honeymoon idea, and your gesture is very nice!
We stayed in a hotel on Custom House Quay. The hotel I really wanted in Temple Bar wasn’t available for all the nights I’d be there, so I decided to go with my second choice rather than split my time between 2 hotels. The hotel I chose was a very short walk to O’Connell St & Temple Bar, and I liked it fine, but wish I’d picked one actually in Temple Bar, closer to the nightlife.
It looks like they have a link at the bottom of their pages to another site for bookings of hotels elsewhere in Ireland: http://www.hotel-ireland.com/
but I don’t know anything about that service.
BTW Mike, I haven’t forgotten your jersey - there just doesn’t appear to be any way of my getting one without actually going to Laois … and that doesn’t seem likely to happen any time soon. If you want a Dublin, Cavan or Monaghan jersey though, I can sort you out
Actually, there’s a suggestion - send your sister to Laois! I’m sure there must be some lovely honeymoon spots in Laois …
