So Chen Guangcheng has escaped his extralegal house arrest. He lay in bed for several days to pretend to be weak. One night he climbed the wall local thugs had built around his house. Then he laid low for a day until a car could pick him up and take him to Beijing.
All of this while blind.
Once in the Chinese capital, “It was decided that there was only one place in China that is absolutely safe, and that’s the U.S. Embassy.”
Chen, a self-trained lawyer has fought against forced abortions and general corruption. He is in short a troublemaker and general pain in the ass. Good for him. Good for the US for sheltering him too.
We need to get along with China. We also need to nudge them toward reforms. It is a balancing act, but we must remember that the US ought not to stand with the forces of ‘stability’ and repression.
