Had a rather unusual experience this evening… Unusual by my standards, anyway.
Went out to play a little poker. On the way back, I was on the freeway not too far from home, when something flew off/out of the car in front of me. I heard a metallic ping and whatever it was under my tires, so I pulled over (with the car in front) to make sure there wasn’t any damage to my car or anything. My car’s fine, but it turns out that their left front tire lost multiple lug nuts, and it’s feeling extremely loose to them. So, since I’m stopped anyway, I offer assistance. It’s a trio of young women about my age, and they have no extra nuts, nor a tire iron.
So I get out my own and experiment. Not only are none of us strong enough to loosen a lug nut, but for some reason I cannot fathom, the front tires of their '96 Honda use DIFFERENT lug nuts than the back ones, and the front ones won’t accept my tire iron! So we’re down to our last option: use the driver’s cel phone and call AAA. They don’t have it, but I do. I only get four free calls a year, but I’m six months away from the rollover, and I figure, if I gotta call 'em more than three times in the next six months, I have bigger problems than I’d care to admit. So I call in the truck on my account, and 40 minutes later, the trio (minus one picked up by the driver’s BF since only two of them would fit in the tow truck cab) are on their way.
They offered to reward me, like with dinner out or something, but I refused. I figured, they’ve been inconvenienced by this enough already. Why should I make 'em go out of their way again just so I can get a free meal? Besides, I’d probably eat cheap anyway just out of courtesy/guilt. Hell, all it cost me was one of four roadside calls and an hour of my time, and once I’d stopped to make sure my OWN car was okay, there was no way I was gonna just drive off and leave three women alone on the freeway at 1 in the morning.
So I suppose I did a little good t’night. But it really makes me wonder: if that had been me stranded on that freeway, without a cel phone, would I have been able to get any help? Would I have had to walk to a phone? At least one Sheriff’s car breezed on by without stopping, presumably assuming (though not inaccurately) that all was in hand. But still, when I go to bed in just a little while, I’ll still be thinking about tonight, and wondering what would’ve happened to those women if no one had stopped…
