Horrible, Horrible movies with cult followings

Highlander
Blade Runner
Name of the Rose
Legend
Straight to Hell
Sonny Boy

Am I missing any?

Rocky Horror Picture Show

Plan 9 from Outer Space

Bladerunner is a great movie. It may not be to your taste, but it is a brilliant adaptation of a brilliant novella.

Name of the Rose is hardly a cult movie, and while not “great” it is kinda fun if you don’t take it too seriously.

My nomination: Blues Brothers. What an awful movie. But than again, it can be fun if you are in the mood.

Titanic?

I like Blade Runner, but I understand why a lot of folks don’t. I have to say I liked it less after Ridley Scott opened his idiotic mouth and “proved” that Deckard is a replicant. What a stupid move.

I’ll second Highlander. I never understood the appeal there.

Event Horizon, one of the most awful movies I’ve ever seen, seems to have a cult following.

I’ll catch flak for this, but I don’t think Fight Club is the brilliant piece of modern satire it gets credit for being.

Any of the early John Waters stuff: Pink Flamingos, Female Trouble, Desperate Living.

I mean, it’s funny, funny stuff, but those movies really are terrible! The acting is atrocious, the locations are gross and depressing, and the stories are, uh… well, actually, they’re very, very Baltimore.

Horrible indeed, but John Waters rules!

The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Earth Girls Are Easy.

I just did not like that movie, but I know plenty of people who think it’s hilarious campy fun.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!! I LOVE that movie!!! And as for John Waters, I’d have to agree that some of his earlier stuff was pretty bad, but “Serial Mom” was awesome.

Let me also add “Batman”. I’m forever being told how much I simply have to agree that the first Batman movie was good. I don’t. It wasn’t.

I’m probably going to get flack for this from the Lynch-o-philes, but I thought “Blue Velvet” was a mess. It used to have a rabid cult following, and might still, for all I know.

Do you love the movie or do you love yelling lines at the screen and throwing toast, etc? I love going to see Rocky Horror Picture Show myself, but on its own with no audience partici…

pation

I have to agree that it isn’t a good film.

I got into Highlander purely beacuse of the series, which I think was better than any of the movies.

ducking showers of rotten tomatoes

I mean, what other show out there guaranteed a good sword fight every episode?

Eraserhead. Man, I hated that movie…

Eric

What about Superman? Believe me, there are a LOT of fruitcakes out there that dig that one, and they’re out there clamoring for a new one! <ahem…believe me, I know my Superman fruitcakes, being one myself>
Does Pulp Fiction count as a horrible movie with a cult following? In my book it does. I hated it. Apparently I am going to hell for that one, according to my husband, who thinks it was the work of a genius. Bleh and Patooey!
And I don’t know about Earth Girls are Easy having a cult following, but I sure liked it. I watch it whenever it’s on. It’s just a darn funny flick. And Jeff Goldblum was hot in that movie.

LIQUID SKY and BRAZIL suddenly popped into my head.

I swear to God, BRAZIL seems to last longer than BERLIN ALEXANDERPLITZ.

Six String Samurai

and I’ll second that

Eraserhead is one of a very few movies I’ve walked out on.

Rocky Horror, whatever its other merits or lack of same, has terrific musical numbers. I don’t see how anyone can deny that.

I know many people who think Joe Vs. the Volcano is the bee’s knees. I don’t understand this at all: not only is it bad, but unlike other bad movies with cult followings, there’s not even anything interesting about the story, acting, production design or luggage.

Another vote for EraserHead

I watche the whole thing on video and that thing just stank.
