I disagree with your definition. Any movie (even a blockbuster) can have weirdly fanatical following. Lots of movies that may have been blockbusters don’t have cult followings. For example, are there any cult followers of The Patriot? I think not. Yet there are certain movies that seem to create obsession; fans dissect every scene, memorize dialogue, debate the meaning, etc. etc. Grease and Pulp Fiction are good examples of blockbusters which also have cult followings.
I wouldn’t go so far as to call it a “horrible, horrible” movie, but it was IMO a standard, by the book, paint by numbers hero movie. Really, nothing special - except for the quasi-religious following it quickly developed.
I’ll second “Star Wars.” The whole alien’s playing instruments and singing was kind of funny, but I’d consider the movie more forgettable than anything else.
Thank you, thank you!! I thought there was something wrong with me for not liking this one. Not one funny thing in it. And I usually love Ben Stiller no matter what he is in.
Heavy Traffic. Ugh! I know there are folks who think that it’s some kind of visionary piece of work. But Jeebus, there was no likeable characters, no real plot, depressing setting and uncomfortable racial humor. It was like one big, awful student film.
Apocalypse Now: it’s like watching someone masturbate. It didn’t help that I saw it within the first few days it was released… the credits hadn’t been done properly, so it was shown without credits, instead you were handed a booklet from Coppola (sp?) telling you about how important the film you were about to see actually was.
Hello, HelloKitty. Welcome to the Resistance. We’re a small but mighty group that refuses to acknowledge this drek as anything more than what it is: 90-ish minutes of your life and more than a few brain cells gone forever for having experienced it.
You should note, there is some debate within our ranks as to Ben Stiller. Some hate him thoroughly, some only in this role. It’s irrelevant to our unity and mission.
What does count is the unflinching belief that Chris Elliot is non-human, talentless, and must be banned from ever working in the entertainment industry in any capacity higher than carpet tape wrangler.
Oh I need to add Natural Born Killers. Terrible movie that I have heard some declare the best movie of the 90’s. Ridiculous story coupled with egotistical directorial stroking makes it easily one of the worst movies, ever.
Lies. Dirty Dancing is such a piece of crap, but it seems like every girl in high school loves in. Sickening. Yeah, maybe it was a blockbuster when it came out - I don’t know. But it certainly doesn’t deserve such a rabid following.
I’m going with the Child’s Play series. Simply a classic horrible string of films. Come on, it doesn’t get any better than the doll sex. The best, though, has got to be, “don’t fuck with the Chuck!” What is there not to love!?
I had assumed that the generally accepted definition of a cult movie was one with a small but very devoted following. I am nothing if not open minded, so I did some searching at cult classic movie sites. The unspoken, but generally, accepted definition of a cult movie is one that has a small, very devoted following. About.com has a cult for dummies page that pretty much jibes with my definition, except that they list “Saturday Night Fever”. Here is a list of sites devoted to cult movies. Not one site that I found includes mainstream hits as cult favorites.
However, in the spirit of compromise, I would be willing to conceed that mainstream hits can have a cultish following within their fan base. But the fact that they have a broad fan base makes them mainstream, and not cult.
Good Lord!!!
Have you people lost all your sense?!
Blade Runner and basically every David Lynch film have, to my complete horror, been added to this list. Why i say…why?!
I found myself bored to hell at A Clockwork Orange. MY friends were all into this flick. I guess it was something you “had” to like to be considered a “cool outcast skater” in the late 80’s early 90’s.The scene where the punks rape that dudes wife in front of him, and the leader penetrates with his long nose mask was just too campy to me. I know this one is considered a masterpiece by many. I think it sucked. As did most stuff of Kubricks. Cept the Shining.
Man, there’s a bunch of movies I can’t believe aren’t on this list (most of these are crap movies I like myself :)).
The Lost Boys - Any movie with the Corey’s cannot be considered a great piece of cinematography, no matter how much I like it.
Time Bandits - What could have more cult value than a group of time travelling midgets fighting a great evil?
The Ice Pirates - Hahahahahaha!! (Sorry…flashback to the afro).
Raising Arizona - Not sure if this one counts since it’s not a horrible movie, but the cult following of this one earns it at least an honorable mention.
