Horse Update!

Just wanted everyone to know that we might have solved the mystery of my horse, Mickey, going lame. Our farrier was up Sunday and said he looks to have a couple of abcesses in his right front foot that are ready to blow. We’re to take him off the Bute paste for a couple of days and see what happens. If he doesn’t improve, our vet will be out to check him again and give him some antibiotics.

So that’s the good news so far. Thanks to everyone for your kind words and good wishes!

I must’ve missed your original post. I’m glad he’s doing better. Are the abscesses in his sole?

My boy Irish was lame for a couple days - he had sores on the bulb of his heel. It looks like he overreached and clipped himself. I’ve been putting ichthammol on it and it seems to be getting better. And my farrier was out Saturday and was beyond thrilled with my foundered mini, Peanut. When I got him, his feet were so overgrown - abuse, really. the side walls of his hooves were turning under and digging into his sole. It’s taken about two years of regular trims, but he’s perfectly sound now. Maybe some separation in the hoof wall, but he moves and looks great!

I misses the original post, but I am so happy to hear you’ve figured out what going on. Here’s hoping Mickey has a speedy recovery!

StGermain, glad you hear your equines are doing well!

Good news! Thanks for the update.

Vet was up tonight and yes, it was a pretty nasty abcess in his right front foot. We’re to soak his foot in very warm water with Epsom salts for a week, then apply a gauze pad with an antibiotic cream to his foot and wrap the whole thing in vetwrap. I don’t have a soaking/barrier boot but I’m gonna get one ASAP!

Doc also gave him a big dose of an antibiotic and an antibiotic in a powder form to put in his feed for a week, so we’re hoping this helps him out. He’s such a trooper; he stood with his foot in a bucket full of water for 15 minutes like he did that every day.

Thank you all so much for thinking of Mickey—goes to prove good wishes DO work!

So awesome! WTG Mickey!
