The other day I read in some thread about putting domains from ad servers into the “hosts” file in widndows so that your browser wouldn’t load them off the internet. so far i’ve entered about 15 of them that I have encountered.
My question is, why isn’t it working? I still get ads from servers listed in the file. I entered the domains in the manner described in the file, ie.
You may have already done this - if so then maybe someone else can help but… You have to reboot for the changes to host to take effect. Restart your machine and try it. Also on my machine there were several ‘host’ files so you have to be sure you get the correct file. In addition if you are editing using notepad it will sometimes save it with a .TXT extension that you may not be able to see (depending on how your Explorer is set), make sure your host file has NO extension.

The Windows version comes ready compiled, just run it.
You can get blocklists for it all over the place (search for junkbuster blocklist), or enter your own.
Since it takes patterns as well, it’s much easier then using the hosts file.
Yeah, and I still don’t get all of them. But it’s a good start. yeah, I know about notepad, just pointing out the obvious to him. It could be he is saving the new file with a TXT extension and leaving the original intact.
