Last year’s article in The Sunday Telegraph had described filthy rooms, rude staff, below-average meals, and a lack of hot water. It had described rooms as mouldy and recounted a reporter’s experience of not being able to get a meal after 7pm, and finding bugs in the rusty communal bathrooms.

Yesterday a jury found it had defamed the hotel’s manager, Archer Field.

His barrister, Clive Evatt, had told the court the article implied Basil Fawlty would have been proud of Mr Field, so “terrible” was the hotel at the Blue Mountains tourist spot.
