House GOP introduces resolutions to expunge Trump impeachment votes (msn.com)
" Reps. Elise Stefanik(R-NY) and [Marjorie Taylor Greene(R-GA) introduced the resolutions on Thursday, with one measure aiming to remove Trump’s 2019 impeachment charges and the other seeking to absolve the charges from his 2021 impeachment."
Is this a legal reality, or just symbolic bullshit?
Couldn’t it be both? I mean, it’s not like an impeachment with no conviction has any sort of legal impact. “Expunging” an impeachment doesn’t change anything since there’s nothing to change.
So it has been done, so shall it be written,
Donald J Trump;
First President to be impeached twice.
First President to have his impeachments removed and absolved by act of Congress.
Please, draw more attention to his impeachable behavior!
I agree with @AlsoNamedBort, there’s no legal ramification to such an expungement. Maybe they go into the Congressional Record and erase that vote? Somewhat comparably, Andrew Jackson was censured by the Senate in 1832. When his allies took control of the chamber in 1837, they similarly had the censure expunged. Didn’t really change anything.
Typically, the purpose of expungement is to remove something from a background search so it doesn’t hold you up if you are renting an apartment or trying to get a job.
Maybe donald is hoping for something similar.
Personally, I am so glad that the country is humming along so smoothly and that there are no major issues needing to be addressed so that our Congress can devote its time and attention to this bullshit.
And isn’t an expungement (word?) applied toward a conviction?
Not necessarily. In Florida (state courts), you can only have a record expunged if the case was dismissed. Expungement is about removing the arrest and charges from your record (since it was unfounded).
Is there any chance that once the Democrates regain the Senate they could bring up the impeachments and convict him? Some constituional shenanigens like not letting Obama have his SCOTUS pick? I would guess that if the situtation was reversed that they would try shit like this, so they assume the Democrates would do this as well.
The Democrats already control the Senate.
It’s the House that brings impeachment charges.
Convict who? In any case, it’s unlikely because they’d need 67 votes.
That was McConnell, and you can’t impeach a senator.
It is hilarious to me that not very long ago Elise Stefanik was supposed to be the savior of the GOP who brought them all back to sanity.
Convict Trump. Maybe I wasn’t clear, I mean if the democrats get a 67 seat majority, could they proceed with convicting Trump on the House impeachment. Its more of a thought experiment because the dems are too pussy to try it, but is there anything stopping a future Senate from addressing a previous impeachment, because I can see the MAGA trying it. Impeachment alone carries no consequences as we have seen especially if you have shame.
I think we are already into an endless political payback war where the party in charge will try and criminalize their rivals.
He’s already had his Senate trials for his two previous impeachments, both of which resulted in his acquittal. He would need to be impeached by the House again in order to be tried by the Senate again.
Maybe it’s best that they occupy themselves with this bullshit, and all the spite committees which go nowhere, rather than inflicting more damage with ill-conceived legislation.
Perhaps the more moronic elements of the GOP (M. Traitor Green, Jim Jordan, Gaetz, Gossar, etc. could be given a little room of their own, where they can pretend to create bills, govern, have meetings, pretend to chair sessions of “whatever”. They can do whatever they want in the kiddy room, while the actual adults do the business of the country in the House.
Let them have crayons and construction paper, but no glue or glitter because they’d make too much of a mess, and if they had ballpoint pens or pencils they might hurt themselves.
I agree with the idea that toothless and meaningless actions are a good use of their time, because at least they’re not causing harm. And they are in office with the intent to do harm. So let them expunge away.
Sure, they could pass a Senate resolution affirming the House impeachment vote. But it would have no force of law. Trump is no longer president, so it wouldn’t remove him from office, and it wouldn’t prevent him from running again. Like the House resolution, it would be a meaningless performative exercise to rile up the base. Democrats don’t usually go in for that sort of thing.
I think @Si_Amigo was saying that the House crazies want to expunge this record because they know that if Biden (or Clinton, whatever) got impeached and found not guilty, they would try again later. So, they assume that the Democrats would do the same, because every accusation is a confession.
Anyway, they’re doing what they were elected to do – own the libs.
How many Republicans who voted for the articles of impeachment are still in the HoR?
ETA: apparently, only two.
The plaintive cry of the two-year old: “Daddy, make it didn’t happen.”
