House! House! House!

Very pretty. I love the woodwork in living room.

Heh. You know, I almost asked them about that - but I doubt it.

Cool house CG! It looks a little bit like ACBG’s house. His is a one and a half story Craftsman’s Style house built in the 1920s. Is this one of those?

One and a Half story? I think this one’s the full two stories… 1910’s, as it turns out.

Update! Closing on the house tomorrow.

For those of you paying attention to my little saga here, can you think of any state/federal/local places I need to notify of address changes, and when? I want to make sure to cover all my bases. I’m too old for Selective Service, so that’s out.

Voter Registration, Property Tax with the County… do I need to notify the Driver’s License people, or does that wait until a license renewal?

I don’t know how it’s handled in WV, but in New Jersey, we have to notify upon moving. You can probably do it online, in fact.

First, WOOHOO!!! At last CandidGamera is no longer homeless!

Get a couple or three of those adress change kit thingys from the post office. Any place that you can’t up your address on line, send one of those. I got a feeling the Property Tax people will know where you are. So will the Utilities people. Surely you can change your address online for the Driver’s License people. Heck, we can do that even in Jawja!

CONGRATS!!!

What a great-looking house! Along with a new roof AND new electical wiring AND copper pipes-fabulous! Congrats!

Well, my apartment wasn’t much, but I wasn’t homeless.

I have one of the packets from the Post Office, didn’t realize it had more than mail-forwarding information in it. I’m changing counties, so the Property Tax people may not know where I am. The Utilities people are being notified.

I’ll look into the whole online DL thing, but West Virginia is not very “Wired”.

Hey - I don’t know ya but congrats! on being a homeowner with a new pad! V exciting. (not that I have gone through that myself but I have many homeowner friends!)

CandidGamera, congratulations on the house! And as for advice, here is mine.

  1. I can’t agree more with AskNott. Anything extra you pay now will save you massive amounts down the line. And even if you don’t keep the house for the life of the mortgage, you will get it back in equity when you sell.

  2. I have know idea how you do your taxes, but if you normally take the standard deduction, look at itemizing from now on. As the mortgage interest is deductible, most people come out ahead by itemizing after they buy a house.

  3. Many areas offer a “homestead” tax credit from the local government. They don’t always advertise this. Ask your county clerk if they have such a program.

  4. Make sure your homeowners insurance is for replacement cost, not appraised cost. Make sure you have a record of all your valuables, and perhaps some pictures of them, stored outside the house.
Good luck, and enjoy your new house.

The other thing to do is to adjust your withholding. If you are going to be able to take a bigger deduction, you will pay less in taxes. There is a withholding calculator on the IRS’s website that is quite good. If you change your withholding now, you will see more money in each paycheck (as opposed to just getting a bigger refund next year) and can use that extra money for anything, including making additional payments on your mortgage.

Congratulations!

Closed on the house. It’s mine. Mine. MINE!

Muhuhahaha!

So much fun when it’s yours.

I would guess that the home inspector checked out the chimney. Make sure the flue does not need cleaned. Also, stick your head in there and learn how the flue lever works before you start a fire. You can’t do that when the fire is going.

Myself, I love working on my house, so I need tools. Lots and lots of them. Great fun. Are you all set? Or would like, some recommendations?

My esteemed father, who’s more excited about the house than I am, is directing the home improvements portion of the process. I spent most of this weekend moving stuff down to the house… still plenty to go, though.

Update on this - apparently, they decided to abandon the encyclopedia, so it did, in fact, come with the living room.
