House of Cards, Season 2

I think that is right, but my recollection was that the President’s deal with Tusk was simply to come clean, be 100% honest, and get a pardon.

Why would it matter that Remy is going to testify against Tusk? Tusk is going to confess anyways and the President will pardon him. He was going to do that until he is on his way to testify and the President tells him the deal is off. Tusk is super-pissed about that, and changes his mind because of it.

All the President needed to do to keep his job was to do what he was planning on doing anyways. The only reason he changed course was because of Frank’s letter which he told him he was still unsure about the veracity of it.

What was the President thinking? That because of the sweet letter that Frank really didn’t stage those 5 or 6 mini-coups and commit campaign finance crimes? Remember at the resignation, the President was very cordial to Frank.

Oh right. Yeah, Walker comes off pretty dumb. I had forgotten his explicit revocation of the pardon deal.

Bad writing.
Tusk couldn’t get a pardon from Walker until he got a sentence. That sentence would have been handed down long after Walker had been removed from office after being convicted be the Senate on the impeachment charges.

A full pardon can come before a sentence, a conviction, or even a charge. Ask Richard Nixon.

OK, I didn’t know that. Thanks.

Also, if Tusk had testified against Underwood, Walker wouldn’t have been impeached, so he could then pardon Tusk.

Anyway, I just finished it last night. Loved this season. It was nice to see Frank not in control all the time, after he basically ran everything without the littlest bit of trouble last season.

I also caught the lie of Frank’s letter. He told the story of his father with the shotgun, saying he wouldn’t do the same. But that’s exactly what he did. His letter was the shotgun and he told the President to pull the trigger.

I didn’t understand what Jackie’s problems with the sexual assault bill were and why she was so hellbent against it.

I’m guessing being a vet with combat experience, she felt that civilian meddling in the military’s judicial processes would diminish the military. Once a jar-head, always a jar-head, I suppose.

I think the idea was the he would be impeached either way because the dems didn’t want him dragging down the ticket during the next election. That is part of the reason Tusk decided to go with Frank because he knew going with the president meant he was choosing an ally who would not be in power for long.

There were bits of that in season 1, particularly the disastrous result of the debate on CNN with the union lobbyist guy. I kept wondering why there wasn’t more political fallout from that for Frank. He came off looking like an idiot there.

I just finished season 2. Loved it!

The first thought I had just as the screen went dark on the last episode, was, “there’s that one loose end!” Referring to Rachel on the run. But I’ll have to check over her storyline. Does her connection to the White House end with Stamper? I can’t think of anything Underwood had to do with her aside from just knowing what was done through Stamper (they never spoke/met nor did Stamper mention Underwood to her, did he?), so can’t Underwood plausibly deny any knowledge about what Stamper did with her and Russo? So maybe her connection does end with Stamper?

I was just thinking about what might bite him in the ass come early season 3. Either her or that hacker guy, but I guess I don’t pay close enough attention to catch what they can use to get to Underwood that didn’t end with Stamper. Anyway, can’t wait!

The hacker guy needed Doug to protect him from eternal servitude but now that there is no Doug, he may still use Rachael to accept the deal the (?) FBI? gave him to work for them. He didn’t like that deal but it may be all he has.

I can’t accept that as plausible coming from a man with Tusk’s experience. Frank has screwed him over at least half a dozen times and proven himself untrustworthy. There is no reason to think that Frank will keep his word and take care of Tusk. More likely than not, Frank will make sure that he is in a Supermax federal prison.

OTOH, he is a powerful person within the party who has all of the goods on Frank. He could persuade the Dems in Congress and even the American people that the corruption started and stopped with Frank Underwood. Walker has the truth on his side, and the testimony from his Chief of Staff, the Congressman that got screwed over by Jackie, the former VP, the teacher’s union rep that he taunted into punching him, and everyone else Frank has dicked over could swiftly convince Congress and the American people that Frank is a shitbag.

These people are career politicians that could almost surely see that Frank will toss them aside when he is done with them. If this was high school, Frank’s antics would be quickly exposed. I can’t imagine that such powerful people allow themselves to be so easily played by showing loyalty to such a man.

I don’t think she knows anything other than Stamper. But as Frank’s Chief of Staff, why would Stamper be involved in getting Russo out of a DUI on his own? The same Russo that Frank then pushed against everyone else’s advice to run for Governor?

That same Frank Russo that Rachel will testify that Stamper had her entice him to drink the night before a radio interview that torpedoed his chances to become Governor. And that same governor’s race that caused the VP to run for the spot (also recommended by Frank) allowing Frank Underwood to become Vice President?

I think Rachel can bring down Frank Underwood.

Jackie strikes me as someone who wouldn’t necessarily be sympathetic to “victims” Either she’s a cavalier asshole, or she’s been a victim and wants to bury the fact, not dredge up feelings that would make her appear to be weak. We learned that she was not someone who necessarily liked to get involved in “relationships” She kept Remy at arms length and wasn’t about to change it until he put the hammer down. I know this doesn’t necessarily point to her aversion to a sexual assault bill, but the show sort of went out of its way to show her callousness towards Remy.

I think it shows just how debauched Washington can be. Not only that, the fact that we never see Frank and Claire having sex together, Claire not being upset, but being amused that Frank was viewing porn, and in season one Claire goes to her former lover to re-kindle their relations while signs that Frank had a relationship with his buddy from school makes me think that although Frank and Claire are obviously in this like Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, they seek sexual gratification elsewhere. Meecham who professes his love for both of them, giving Frank cufflinks and Claire approving looks and intimate conversation, is the perfect foil for them to engage in sexual activity without being totally vulnerable to each other. Frank and Claire know too much about each other. Meecham is the innocent so to speak, getting sucked into the Underwood’s underworld.

or…ahem…getting sucked into his underwood.

We finally finished watching season 2 last night, and we’re pretty sure Rachel will be pivotal in the next season. I’m kinda wondering if Meechum might turn out to be less loyal than he’s been portrayed - that would make for an interesting twist. Especially if he puts a bullet in Frank’s head to end the series.

So we have to wait another year, which means we’ll be rewatching seasons 1 and 2 next January to get all caught up again. Netflix is devious!!!

When the president handed Frank’s letter back to him, Frank tossed it in the fire without checking to see if the letter was actually in the envelope. If the now former president still had the original letter would it still be useful?

I don’t think it’d be super useful; didn’t Frank carefully specify that he’d be willing to take the fall even though he didn’t actually do the stuff in question?
